Story 1) We went to Applebees the other day(I really like their spicy
burger on tortillas). When we left we could smell gas something
fierce so we wheeled around to where we were parked and there was a
puddle of gas. I checked our Tahoe out thoroughly and it wasnt
leaking, then I noticed it was coming from the junker Toyoya sitting
next to us.
I went in and got the manager and she found her employee whose car it
was. He was a 19 yo guy, and he, his manager and myself walked to his
car. I showed him the gas, and he said he knew it was leaking but
thought he fixed it. He said he was going to Auto Mechanic school.
When I bent down and saw how he fixed it, I remembered why I do most
of the work on our vehicles....He had a hole in the bottom of his gas
tank and he tried to fix it with JB Weld. He's going to frikkin' mech
school and cant take a gas tank off and get a used one from the
junkyard??? This tank was right on the bottom...half hour job to
switch.

Story 2) My neighbor is a 22 yo city boy who wants to be a farmer. He
was drinking with his brother and a friend last night and they drove
to town to get more beer. On the way back, he and his brother get
into a fight and he takes his pickup keys out of the ignition and
throws them in the ditch. Now they are sitting in the middle of a
gravel road, with the auto tranny in park and he has no other key.
They were a half mile from his house. His brother and his friend got
their car and left. My buddy took his tractor back to the pickup(he's
still drunk), hooks onto it with a chain in the front, and proceeds to
drag his transmission-locked tires down the gravel road.....until the
park pin broke. He pickup flew by him and lodged beside his tractor,
crunching his right front fender.
His FIL lives a mile away(this is at 1 am), so he calls him and he
comes over and cleans up the mess. He said he would have called me
but he was worried about waking up our kids. I told him to call next
time he does something so dumn, as I want pics. Now his inlaws think
he has a drinking problem(he might).

Gawd, I'm glad I was never this dumn when I was young.

Are you sure you don't live in my sister's neighborhood in Arky? She
has neighbors like this (and she bought her son a mini-4 wheeler when
he was 4, as well. Plus his stoopid father taught him how to run a
chainsaw at 5, etc. etc. Oh, and they let him drive this big ass
tractor around, which he proceeded to drive into a bunch of fencing--
that was just put up by his stoopid father. The destroyed fence was
the worst part...the kid could have been killed.)

I let my now 7 yo drive a pickup around hay field by himself while I
bale. It is nearly perfectly safe, and he does a great job and is
very conscientous. Also a great way to make a great driver out of
him. Now my 5 yo is years away from any driving. He's a wild kid.
No tractor driving yet(there is some danger there), but I also let 7
yo drive the combine across the field last fall. While it is a huge
peice of equipment, I had it idling, and it has a hydro(no clutch or
gears). About half way across, he gets on the CB and asks if he can
go faster. IMML.

That's where I learned to drive. The truck had school bus first gear
that would probably top out at 5mph.

With some kids, I could see this being okay. With my nephew (just
turned 6) who is ADHD and who knows what else.... probably not. He was
the nephew that drove his mini 4-wheeler through flames while his dad
was burning weeds. (IMML, too--not in front of him--but that kid is
stupidly fearless.) He's way out of control.

That one takes the cake!! (I'd be the one calling the neighbors
retards, as well, so I guess I'm a jerk, too.)

My grandfather had me driving the John Deere A when I was 5. The hayfield
was pooltable flat and my much older cousins loaded the hay. Never had a
problem.
