The Vikes face NFC opponents the next 3 games. This is not
a unique situation, but the current standings make the next 3
games a unique opportunity. Here's how:

If the Vikes beat San Francisco on Dec 9th, then the 49ers
are eliminated from the playoffs (two teams not winning divisions
would have +3 on SF with 3 games to go).

If the Vikes then beat Chicago on Monday the 17th, then the
Bears are eliminated from the playoffs (the conf loss drops them
lower than NYG, and H2H sweep drops them below Vikes, who
would have a 2-game edge with 2 to play).

If Minnesota then beats Washington on Dec 23rd, then the
Redskins are eliminated from the playoffs (Vikes & Giants with
minimum of 2-game edge with one to play, with 1 NYG win).

Talk about having destiny in one's own hands! Win the next
three, and the Vikes have a shot at #5 seed in the NFC
tournament, thanks to that 41 - 17 clubbing of the Giants in
New Jersey on Nov 25th. Wow it felt good to finally club the
Giants on the noggin!

Too bad Chicago collapsed yesterday. The Giants needed to lose but now
appear to be a lock for the number 1 wildcard spot....but you never know.

The Bears collapsing was great news for us. Even if the Giants had
lost we would probably need to win our last four games to have a
chance at the #5 seed. And I don't think it makes much difference
whether we're #5 or #6 anyway.

The way I see it, we are tied at 6-6 with Detroit and Arizona, neither
of which is likely to win more than two more games this year. Our two
remaining home games are against Washington and Chicago. Both are 5-7,
and they play each other on Thursday. I would much rather have us face
these teams when they're out of playoff contention.

As things stand right now, 9-7 will almost certainly get us into the
playoffs.

Next week's game in Frisco is huuuuge.

I view Chicago as a team we need to beat anyways to get the berth. Thus
they are a nonfactor. The Giants on the other hand are now tougher to
catch.

I think the Vikings will finish 9-7.

They're playing extremely well right now, but it's really tough to win
at this time of year.

The way I figure it the Vikes are in control of their own destiny. If
they and Arizona win out they'll be tie in conference games but the
Vikes will have the edge in common games W-L (SF,Wash,Atl and Det). The
Vikes only lose to Det once and Arizona lost to SF twice and Wash.

Yeah, i was torn between who i wanted to win that one. Glad
that someone had to lose! Since we can't win the North, all we
can do is take care of our own business. Seeding at 5 or 6
is not a big deal: all January games would be on the road either
way.

Would have been nice to be only one game back from the Giants,
and tied with the Bears with a game against them coming up,
but no big deal either way. Three more wins and we got a shot,
four more and we're likely in.

One thing I forgot is if the Lions win out then they will win the tie
breaker since they'll have a better divisional record but they play
Dallas next week and also at SD and at GB.

Detroit is toast. I really thought they would give us a much tougher
game than they did, but they're not playing anywhere near as well as
they were at the start of the season. Roy Williams is easily their
best player, and is done for the year with a sprained knee. There's a
lot of finger-pointing going on there, and I'm not sure that Marinelli
likes having Martz as OC.

Arizona is really banged-up too. Matt Leinart is on IR with a
fractured clavicle, Kurt Warner is playing with a dislocated elbow and
bruised ribs, and Fitzgerald and Boldin are both hurt as well. They
beat the Browns on a play eerily reminiscent of the Denard Walker
pushed-out-of-bounds play of a few years ago. Only in this case it was
the Zona defensive back pushing Kellen Winslow out, but unbelievably
no push-out was called this time. However, even with their soft
schedule I do not see them going better than 2-2 down the stretch.
