"The day he was released we had great interest," Chargers general manager
A.J. Smith said in a statement. "We like our inside linebackers but we are
young at the position. We love the possiblity of mixing youth with
experience. Derek brings a wealth of experience and we're happy to have him
aboard."

Excuse me, but isn't that a complete contradiction to what he did last off
season? AJ creates the problem of lack of experience in that position and
now does a complete 180.

Last season, I think they actually tried to re-sign Godfrey, but he wanted
either too much money or, more likely, too much playing time. Donnie just
plain wanted too much money. Plus, it may be easier to bring a vet in to be
a backup rather than asking a guy who's started for several years to assume
a backup role.

I just don't think Donnie is a back-up player. He's still a starter and
probably will continue to be for the next couple years. So why ask a starter
,that is still producing and better than the guy under him, to be a back-up?
I would understand if the back-up outplays the starter, but AJ knew that
wasn't going to happen. The only way Wilhelm was going to start is if Donnie
was gone and that's a disservice to the Chargers.

Now instead of keeping a guy that knows and produces in this system, we
have to get someone that is a complete unknown, as far as how he will
produce around these guys. All for what? To save some cash when we are
millions under the cap?

Donnie was going to cost us $5 million last year & signed with KC for about
$14 million over 3 years. As good as he was, & still is, there was no way
AJ was going to commit that kind of money when he wanted to bring in young
guys to work their way into our system. Edwards was a solid player for us
during his time in SD, but I'm OK with AJ's choice on this one.

The millions we are currently under the cap will go pretty quick in the next
few years as AJ keeps re-signing our veterans while adding some new talent
at key spots, e.g., replacement for Jamal.

No GM is going to make everyone happy, but IMO AJ does a pretty damn good
job.

Go Bolts !

Dont forget we had reports that Donnie was talking about his unhappiness to
EVERYONE who would listen
(damn that was hard to put diplomatically)
so possibly avoiding the "locker room downer" was also in the reason

(Another AJ fan here
not that he is perfect)

Fact: the defense was better with Donnie in the lineup.

Is that causative or correlative?

If Donnie leaving was the only difference from the prior season, I might go
with causative but as it was I'm going to say correlative is even too strong
a word. Adjunct or coincidental would be more to my way of thinking.

Go Bolts !

The lack of ability to prevent first downs via the run ended our
team's season.

See: NE's 9 minute drive to end the AFC Championship Game.

BTW, how about sitting on your replies a bit before hitting the "send"
button? You're replying to yourself.
