Charlotte, NC - Homecoming story turns into a "coming out" story during the
holidays when Independence High School football star and University of
Florida quarterback, Chris Leak, announced his long-time homosexual
life-style. The Gator's senior quarterback, who eyes a possible BCS
championship against the Ohio State Buckeyes, revealed to family and friends
over the holidays that he is gay, and asked for their forgiveness and
support.
Leak, in an unconfirmed dialogue stated, "I know my family and friends will
be shocked and very disappointed. But this is who I am. It doesn't change
the athelete and student I am . . . I will always do my best, and my best is
to bring another national championship to Gainsville."
Friends and colleagues of Leak were divided on his announcement.
Shaqwan Bivens of Matthews, NC stated, "Chris is one of the best people I
know. I mean, who cares what his sexual preference is. If he's happy, then
I'm happy. I just want him to show the country that Charlotte ain't no blip
on the radar screen and represent the Independence Patriots!"
Another friend of Leak's and Independence alumni Tyrone Chambers had this to
say, "You know, I mean it's like, Chris is a great football player and all,
but it's so disappointing to find out he likes dudes. I mean, I ain't got
nothing against that, but to have the career he's had and be playing for a
national chamionship, I think it sends the wrong message to our kids out
there. I mean, I don't want my younger brothers wanting to be a homo just so
they want to be like him."
At any rate, the residents of Charlotte, NC seem to be proud of their
quarterback regardless of what he puts in his mouth. He has a job to do and
they support him. Many speculate the media attention will propel him into
the NFL draft spotlight which already faces numerous lawsuits over the
harassment of proclaimed gay players. When asked about the accusations and
contraversy Leak said the following, "the only thing I'm concerned about is
winning a national championship. I don't know why the media is so worried
about the personal lives of others. I'm a student and I'm an athelete, and
all I want to do is win and get my degree."
Leak will front the Gators offense against the undefeated Ohio State
Buckeyes for the NCAA National Chamionship on Monday, January 8, 2007 in the
Tostitos BCS Championship Game in Glendale, AZ aired on FOX at 8 p.m. ET.
