Okay, I give-up...

About every 5 clicks I make while surfing I get a pop-up. Not your
typical Netflix type pop-up but a whole new Explorer window which
tries to take me to another web site. Typically, but not limited to,
University of Phoenix and numerous sites which promise to wipe all
that non-existent pr0n off my computer.

McAfee can't fix it, reseting Explorer can't fix it, Microsoft can't
fix it and my generally piss-poor MS sys admin. capablities can't fix
it, disabling add-ons won't fix it....

Any ideas?

Do you use Spybot and/or Ad-Aware?

Also, get thee to Mozilla.

Firefox is your friend (with the adblock plus add-in). I can't
remember the last time I saw a pop up window. Oh yea, it was when I
was using IE.

This post was made via Mozilla.

I use Mozilla on my UNIX box at work, problem is that many web pages
do not work properly. I assume I won't have that trouble in Windows
XP?

Yes, it sounds like you got exactly the same problem I had about a year ago.
Download and install Windows Live OneCare. It was the only thing that
straightened out my computer. Note that if you have other
spyware/anti-virus you'll need to uninstall them. WLOC combines both and
also a firewall. None of my systems have been infected since installing
that software.

And being the key. I find both of those find spyware that the other
one misses.

Yes, I agree. Now only if I could get the people at work to agree
with me. Mozilla is our list of banned pages, so we are forced to use
only approved IE.

Hmm. Your day may be coming sooner than you think.

A bunch of Firefox users jest ran across problems with the Scout network.

Yes, for the most part. When I had a dual boot linux/PC at my last
job, Mozilla Firefox worked great in XP and was flaky in Linux. Make
sure you download Mozilla Firefox and not just the Mozilla browser.
That one doesn't work well. Still, I've found a few pages that
Firefox can't handle, such as the ADP portal site where I need to
access benefits documents from my employer.

Once you clean it up, try using two different computers/logins/browsers.
It really doesn't matter whether you have two different computers, profiles,
or browsers, so long as you keep 'em straight.

I have one at work that has java script, pop-ups, cookies, just about
everything turned off. I could click on the nastiest link in the world,
and nothing would happen. I use this browser for personal browsing.
(At home I have an old copy of Netscape 3.04 Gold set up that way. All
I want over a phone line is text and pictures.)

For work related stuff, and a few sites I know rock solid safe, I use
another browser that has everything turned on.

You can also do a combination of the two -- use the safe browser to do
most of your navigation, but if you get to a "safe" site with whistles
and bells you want to activate, cut 'n paste the Earl into the browser
that can run those things.

Dudes and dudettes,

Do learn to use the extensions developed for Firefox. "NoScript" in
particular is useful. You can selectively allow which script to be
able to run on your browser. Between "NoScript", "AdBlocker", and some
gray matter between the ears, I've never been infiltrated by adwares
or trojans transmitted via web even though my only other line of
defense is Symantec Antivirus.

SuperAntiSpyware. Plus AdAware, AVG anti-spyware and
anything else you can find. Install 'em, run frequently.
Even our SonicWALL router doesn't keep it all out. - Tony

I had it the same time Bill did. Our computer was under warranty yet,
so the wifey called Dell, the lady there took over our computer and
cleaned lots of stuff out. Thats about all I can recall.
