From what I've read, Allen better be signed to a long term contract
before July.

Why?

He's said that he won't sign a deal if he plays one down as a franchise
player. Assuming that's not subject to change (and I'm not assuming
that at all), that would give the Chiefs until the start of the regular
season to sign him.

If he doesn't sign, they can franchise him again next year. He could
sit out a year and then become a free agent, but that's a lot of money
to walk away from, and he'd be giving up a year of his prime. Not to
mention the fact that sitting out may bring back his character issues.

This is what I read:

Allen has been unavailable for comment. His agent, Ken Harris,
declined comment other than to refer to Allen's previous statement
that he would not sign a long-term deal with the Chiefs if an
agreement isn't reached by the middle of July.

So in one statement, it's playing under the franchise tag; in another
it's the middle of July. This is called negotiating. I don't take any
of it too seriously. None of it is written in stone. Even if the
Chiefs don't sign him by the start of the regular season, there's no
reason why they can't kiss and make up later.

I agree; I just hope they don't take too many chances with this guy.
We need him. He caught more td's than Kennison.

That's probably the main reason Kennison was released today.

It seems to me that it's very difficult, maybe next to impossible, to come out ahead signing FAs from other teams. The other coach *knows* what the guy is worth. He is probably the world's leading ex
