We've knocked the refs a lot ... and deservedly so ... but this team
of refs let the players play ... during the game sure I was shouting
for holding ... or a head slap ... at times ... but one hardly knew
the refs were there and they let the players decide the game ...

The officiating was excellent, and I'll admit that as a Pats fan.
They kept it clean, didn't pull any magical holding penalties or other
bullshit calls out of their asses, and let the two teams play 60
minutes of solid football. It was no-nonsense, and everyone can say
that they saw the best team win last night. |

The only obvious missed penalty that I saw was on Toomer's great catch
down the left sideline in the first half - he jammed his extended arm
under the DB's face mask, which should have been offensive pass
interference in the least, but probably should have been a personal
foul (hands to the face). But it didn't affect the outcome as the
Giants didn't score on that drive anyway. Otherwise, I thought the
officiating was fine. A few years ago, Eli would have been whistled
down for being "in the grasp" on that miracle play to Tyree. But it's
not a few years ago, and the refs let them play.

That's what pissed me off so much about Belichick's angle-shooting on the
12men on the field penalty. I thought it was obvious the officials weren't
going to call something so trivial as that when it didn't even affect the
play. Of course Belichick had every right to do it under the rules but BS
like that was not what review was intended for. We all know the refs can
pretty much call a penalty on every play if they feel like it.
The best part was I think Belichick just fired up the Giants even more by
doing that.

I don't get this. It was a clear infraction, even though you don't
like it. And BB checked with the refs to see if it was challengeable
by rule, and it was. And it *did* affect the game. It was a big
play. The Pats didn't translate that into points, but if Coughlin did
that, you'd say what a great job to challenge that play.

I was surprised you could challenge something like that. Yes, it's a
penalty, but as it only becomes a penalty when the ball is snapped and
that moment is controlled by the team on offense, it seems to me that
it's potentially open to abuse...

And the refs gave Toomer a makeup call from the last game (the phantom
personal foul) by letting a rather obvious push-off go unoticed on that
39 yard bomb he caught on the sideline.

That's the exact type of play I was talking about in this thread when I said
they could call things on every play if they wanted to. They could have
easily called offensive interference on that play. Twelve men on the field
when a guy is one step from running off the sidelines is cheap.
