The following article supports the resting
modality used by the Colts and Bears to
get to the Super Bowl last year, and used
by the Cowboys, Colts, Bucs, Steelers,
Seahawks, and Jaguars this year, holding
back an all-out effort to win at season's
end, all 6 losing their final regular sea-
son game -- 2 of them losing their first
playoff game, 2 of them winning their
first playoff game, 2 of them yet to play
their first playoff game.

Teams that went all-out to win their final
regular season game: Chargers, Patriots,
Giants, Titans, Redskins, Packers, 5 of 6
winning their final regular season game
-- 2 winning their first playoff game,
2 losing their first playoff game, 2 yet to
play their first playoff game.

The Giants, not resting paid off versus a
resting Bucs team. This weekend, a resting
Jaguars team (in their last regular season
game) will get a chance to play a non-
resting team (the Patriots, who went all-
out to win in their last game) and this
Sunday, a resting Cowboys team (half-
hearted effort against the Redskins) will
get a chance to play a non-resting team
(the Giants).

Of course, the article fails to mention the
end season swoons the Cowboys have
experienced since 1996, and the fear
that many fans have that ending the sea-
son with losses is far from the ideal way
to enter the post-season.

The evidence is in regarding the debate as
to whether it's better to 'rest' in preparation
for the playoffs -or- it's better to go all-out
to win your final regular season game. It
appears that the verdict weighs heavily in
favor of the teams that went all-out to win
this particular time around, with all -4-
teams competing for Conference Champion-
ships having gone all-out to win their final
regular season game.

None of the 'resting' teams made it to
the Conference Championship games.

The -4- teams competing for the Conference
Championships, all of them went all-out to
win their final regular season game.

There's resting and then their is not playing your injured guys so they can
heal. I think the Cowboys did more of the latter.

Not sure what it was yesterday, but if they made one or two plays they would
have won the game.

Hmmm... small sample size, questionable methodology, simplistic
conclusions... yep, it's Observer.

If the Patriots had rested, they'd have lost? Packers too?

We went half out, what does that do?

Let's not read much into the last game, many a Super Bowl has been won
by teams that took that last week off.

The results are mixed prior to this year.
This year, the results are clear, going
all-out to win ruled. As for whether
Dallas would have benefitted from
a Packers win over the Bears, thereby
motivated to go all-out to win versus
the Redskins to try to avoid that frigid
4 degree game that the Giants will have
to play this Sunday, that shall forever
remain an unknown.

What is known is that the Cowboys
slumped in the late season, that slump
was perpetuated in the Redskins game,
and their offense never really got back
on track after being derailed in the
Eagles @ Dallas game.

That one elicited a chuckle.

Agreed, though I wouldn't have objected to the former.

True, but if they'd made one or two plays, they'd have been a better
team. Bad teams are always talking about how they would've been in it if
the QB hadn't thrown those two INTs for TDs. The Cowboys weren't quite
that bad, but when you're dropping 1st down conversions and TDs, missing
wide open receivers, getting penalized to kill your offensive drives or
extend your opponents, not wrapping up when you tackle... well, you get
the idea. The Cowboys just didn't bring their A game, and haven't for
about a month and a half.
