The Dallas Cowboys had a very mediocre coaching staff, in 2006. From
top to bottom. Especially at the top. (BP) They had good players,
but 9 - 8 is a very poor record for a so called future Hall of Fame
coach after he's had four years to build up a team.
I was very uneasy, when the Cowboys kept a number of assistant coaches
from the Parcells' GANG OF MEDIOCRITY, when Wade was hired.
I guess Jerry's thinking was that they could be beneficial in the
transition to a new coaching staff. But, why would you want anything
transferred from a pathetic .500 winning system to a new coach.
Unfortunately, a number of them were retained in strategic positions
on the new staff. Offensive line, secondary, and special teams.
Offensive Line:
Jerry spent $17 million bonus money on two players, Colombo and
Gurode.
Colombo: Another right tackle who can't remember the snap count, and
false starts to kill numerous drives.
Gurode: A center who seems to pass protect alright, but can't figure
out when to snap the ball. In the shotgun formation, Romo has no idea
where the ball will come at him, when it's snapped.
It may be to the left, it may be to the right, it may be 10 feet over
his head, it may be low, it may be snapped early and hit him in the
head.
How can any QB concentrate on the play at hand, when he has to play
centerfield before he can even gets the football in his hands.
If the center can't snap the ball in the shotgun, either he should be
replaced, or the shotgun should be removed from the playbook.
Gurode got a $10 million signing bonus, based on Parcells' word that
he's the man. I don't care that he was voted into the popularity
contest probowl.
Flozell Adams: It's time to let him go and get a good, young
replacement.
Leonard Davis: A keeper. $16 million signing bonus may have been a
bargain compared to the $10 million to Gurode.
Kosier: I know nothing about him. His name is seldom called during a
game.
This high priced offensive line pass protected fairly well until the
playoff game, then it fell apart. However, the run blocking was
pathetic all season long. A championship offensive line should be
able to pass protect and run block.
Let's see, who was the offensive line coach for the Cowboys? Well
look here. It was one of the old holdovers from the Parcells gang of
mediocrity, TONY SPARANO.
Tony, Tony, Tony, why couldn't you teach this highpriced offensive
line how to run block? Why didn't you teach them how to remember the
snap count? Why didn't you teach the center how to snap the ball in
the shotgun formation?
And the media is suggesting that the loss of Tony Sparano is a major
blow to the Dallas Cowboys' future? Insanity of the highest order.
A Wade Phillips offensive line coach hire will be a hugh upgrade over
the below average performance of Tony Sparano.
Secondary:
All I saw, during the season, was total confusion in the secondary.
Players out of position. Players constantly getting beat on third and
long. Players taking bad angles on receivers, playing off receivers
10 yards, and the list goes on and on.
Who was the coach of this three ring circus? Uh oh, another old
Parcells' hold over from the GANG OF MEDIOCRITY, Todd Bowles.
It's imperative that this incompetent failure be replaced immediately
so that the secondary can be developed into championship quality.
Without a new coach and an upgrade in players, it will be difficult to
bring home another Super Bowl trophy.
Special Teams:
Well, there again, the man responsible for the lousy play of our
special teams is none other than another holdover from the Parcells
GANG OF MEDIOCRITY, Bruce Read.
Please, Mr. Parcells, take all your old coaches away from the Cowboys
so Wade can assemble a good coaching staff.
You are no better at selecting assistant coaches than you are at
selecting offensive line.
