It appears the Patriots have pulled off one
of the best trades in NFL history in acquiring
Randy Moss for a fourth-round draft choice.
Here are some other trades that were one-
sided:
Brett Favre from Atlanta to Green Bay for
a first-round draft choice. The Falcons used
the 19th overall choice on Southern Missis-
sippi RB Tony Smith, who gained 329 yards
in three NFL seasons. Favre, now in his 17th
season, holds several NFL passing records.
John Elway from Baltimore to Denver for
quarterback Mark Hermann, the rights to
offensive tackle Chris Hinton and a first-
round pick in the 1984 draft, which turned
out to be guard Ron Solt. Elway became
a Hall of Famer, winning 148 games and
passing for 51,475 yards. Hinton made
seven Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro five
times in 13 NFL seasons; Hermann had
16 touchdowns and 36 interceptions in
his 11-year career; Solt played nine sea-
sons, including five with the Colts.
Herschel Walker and three draft picks
from Dallas to Minnesota for five players,
six conditional draft picks and a 1992 first-
round pick. In three seasons with the Vik-
ings, Walker had 2,945 yards from scrim-
mage. The Cowboys used draft choices
obtained in that deal to get Emmitt Smith
and Darren Woodson, among others, who
were vital cogs in Dallas' three Super
Bowl titles in the 1990s.
Others: Steve Young from Tampa Bay to
San Francisco for second- and fourth-round
draft choices; Marshall Faulk from the Colts
to the Rams for second- and fifth-round
picks; and Bobby Layne from the NY Bull-
dogs to Detroit for end Bobby Mann. Y.A.
Tittle from San Francisco to NY Giants for
guard/linebacker Lou Cordileone.

Yep. That happened about two weeks after Jerry had told Herschel that he
would retire as a Cowboy. I remember I was pissed at the time, but that
trade was genius, and Herschel eventually did retire as a Cowboy. I just
wished Herschel could have gotten one of those Super Bowl rings that he was
indirectly responsible for the Cowboys winning. |

Well, he only won 1 SB, just like Trent Dilfer and Brett Favre, among
others. |

I was wondering about that, myself.
Back in the day, Cowboys GM Tex Schramm rarely traded for other
players (two years earlier, he did engineer a trade for Steelers RB
Preston Pearson; Preston, along with the "Dirty Dozen" rookies led
Dallas to SB X).
In any event, Schramm's genius was in NOT trading for the number one
overall pick in the '77 draft, which would go to Seattle's fellow
expansion franchise, Tampa Bay (TB went 0-14 in its expansion year,
'76, whereas Seattle went 2-12).
The number one overall pick would be prohibitively expensive, but
Schramm gambled that then TB head coach John McKay, recently out of
USC, would select USC RB Ricky Bell, whom he had coached.
That's exactly what TB did; Dallas used its #2 overall pick to select
undersized, but lightning quick, Heisman-trophy winning RB Tony
Dorsett from the national champion Pitt Panthers. And the rest, as
they say, is history.
[By the way, Tony went from an NCAA championship to a Super Bowl title
in his rookie season. I wonder how many other players went from a
national collegiate championship to a Super Bowl title their rookie
year? I'm sure there have been others, but I don't know off-hand.] |

About 30 years ago (1977 draft) Seattle gave up
the NUMBER 2 overall pick to Dallas in exchange
for the 14th pick. Let me repeat that, a # 2
for a #14! Of course the Cowboys did give up
3 second rounders, and an OL I think. Dallas
used that pick for NCAA rushing yardage
record breaker, and Heisman Trophy winner,
Tony Dorsett. As they say, the rest is history.
I suspect if you ask the people in Seattle, they
would say it was their worst trade ever. I
wonder where this is included in the article? |

Maybe Lyn Swann at USC then SB IX? |

I think it has been done before, but I can't remember either. I know
this one is weak, but I think Lance Alworth (teammate of Jerry Jones
and Jimmy Johnson at Arkansas) won the college championship at
Arkansas, and then won with the old AFL Charges (LA, or San Diego).
Maybe not.
I do know that in the NBA, Magic Johnson (Mich St.) won with the
Lakers in his rookie season.
By the way, McKay had let it be known that he was going to draft
Bell, hence the Tex Schram action.
Didn't Bell score 4 or 5 TDs on 4 or 5 yards rushing in the Rosebowl? |

Was that a trade for Pearson? I thought the Steelers released him and
the Cowboys picked him up on waivers.

I don't know whether it was a gamble; I think Shramm asked them who
they were going to pick and perhaps the trade was contingent on
Dorsett being there in the second round
One reason for the trade by Seattle is that Dorsett's agent sent
Seattle a letter saying that he would not play for them so rather than
wasting a draft choice, they traded - there was a rule change which
allowed this as I remember. They did get back at us recently when we
traded for Joey Galloway and they got Shawn Alexander with one of
those picks |

My bad -- you're absolutely right.
Pearson was waived by the Steelers and the Cowboys picked him up.
Ironically, that further supports the point I was trying to make (and
not doing a very good job of proving it) that Dallas rarely traded for
players.
Thanx for the correction. |

To add insult to injury, I think JG was injured in his FIRST game as a
Cowboy (against Philly I think) and was out for the ENTIRE
season! At the time of the injury I think Philly was leading by
30+ points in the 4thQ.
Dallas gave up 2 #1s and got NOTHING that first year! |

And then we traded Galloway for Keyshawn. KJ was a decent player for the
Cowboys, but look at Galloway now. If he'd done that with the Cowboys,
he'd still be here! |
