Last week, Cooley's Roster bonus was guaranteed, which futher spread
out his cap impact.

Also, Randle El, Andre Carter, and Randy Thomas re-structured
(converted base salary into bonus).

After these moves, the total cap hit of the 51 highest paid players
(that's all that count until August) totals just under $120M.

The cap is $116M

Here are the top 10 players against the cap:

Clinton Portis = $8.9M
Jon Jansen = $8.8M
Chris Samuels = $8.3M
Shawn Springs = $7.7M
Mark Brunell = $6.5M
M. Washginton = $6.5M
Griffin = $6.2M
Santana Moss = $5.9M
Randy Thomas = $4.9M <-after last week's re-struc
Brandon Lloyd = $4.2M

What's the impact of Brunell retiring?

Right now, he has a 2008 base salary of $5M + prorated bonus of $1.5M
for a total 2008 cap hit of $6.5M

If he retires before June 1, his cap hit will be that $1.5M prorated
bonus PLUS next year's prorated bonus, also $1.5M, PLUS an 80K
incentive bonus that he earned that is sitting on his 2010 contact
year. That's total of nearly $3.1M (for a guy not on the team).

Total cap savings = $3.4M

-----------------------------------------

If he retires AFTER June 1st.

His cap hit in 2008 is $1.5M, his cap hit in 2009 is $1.6M

-----------------------------------------
Also, the team could invoke the Barry Sanders rule, and have Mark pay
back the 2009 $1.5M, and get that off the books, but they wouldn't do
that.

Are you positive? I thought I read somewhere that retirements are not
covered by the June 1 rule, though I don't recall for sure(which is why
I'm asking).

Yea, I wouldn't say that the Skins wouldn't make him pay it back either.
Gibbs is back in NASCAR and there's no one to protect Brunell now.

Brunell is not going to retire - he loves to play. The Redskins will
have to release him.

Brunell, being a WCO guy, is just the right guy to tutor Campbell on
the footwork and timing that is required. I bet they restucture him,
and keep him. Maybe they can even talk him into a pay cut.

Make him a coach. It's a lot cheaper and he can do the same thing.

If you could make pigs fly, John, getting Brunell to convert to coaching
would be duck soup also.

Worth a try ain't it? He's not worth much of anything as an actual
backup anymore except for teaching.

He's actually worth more as a backup this year than last year since this
offense plays to his strengths. In preseason last year he had the best
footwork of the three. His body won't hold out for more than four games,
but so what?
