His arm looks fine. And his understanding of the Raiders offense is
improving. But Daunte Culpepper's surgically repaired knee remains an issue.
During this morning's practice, Culpepper looked like a quarterback
uncomfortable when forced to move out of the pocket. Even defensive
tackle Warren Sapp admited as much when asked about Culpepper's progress.
"Once he gets his legs back, then that's going to be the thing, because
you play this game with your legs and your mind and everything else will
follow," Sapp said. "If you got your mind straight and you're able to
stand on your feet and you got good balance, everything else will
follow. But he's hurting. You can see it. Certain instances when he
(moves), you know, you can see it."
Coach Lane Kiffin said Culpepper will see action as the third
quarterback in the team's exhibition opener Saturday night against
visiting Arizona, behind Josh McCown and Andrew Walter. The likelihood
of him winning the starting job for the season opener against Detroit
appears remote _ because of his health and his limited time in the offense.

BULLSHIT! We were there today and saw him running all over the field like
a spring chicken! The above article is what happens when "experts" file
their reports from 600 miles away!

Warren Sapp is lying then? Why is Culpepper third on the depth chart
for the first preseason game?

God knows the Oakland Raiders have never intentionally
released misleading reports or outright lied just to achieve
some sort of advanatge from confusion. Just a thought, but
how many times has Al lied to you and how many times has Dean?

Check again, dickwad. Culpepper is first, with McCown and Walter 2nd
and 3rd. And Culpepper is 2 seasons removed from that knee injury, he
will start if healthy. Now, we'll excuse ourselves while you EDAD. |

Lying about Culpepper? Nah. I don't any team has to worry about
underestimating him.

Are you retarded dope head? Culpepper is last on the depth chart. He
will be coming in last during the first preseason game you maroon. Pay
attention.

Or um....gee maybe this reporter from SAN DIEGO was a tad bit misleading?
I watched Culpepper go through footwork drills with the other QB and was
watching for a *wince* and didn't see it. I was 20 yards from him and
watched him rolls out parallel to the line and throw a strike to Curry and
there wasn't any movement on his part that would indicate that he was
having problems of any sort. If the knee was an a worry you'd think they
would protect it with a knee brace, but he was running around in short
with both knees exposed and there was nothing there. I think you've bought
into a lie JC...

The obvious reason for that is that CPep has had limited time to learn the
offense. McCown and Walter have had all of the off-season practices and
and camp to do so. You don't bring a guy in off the street in the NFL and
have him tell his receivers to do a button hook at the blue Mazda and then
expect him to have success. You seem predisposed to find failure in
Culpepper. I for one hope you're wrong. Not because I want to be right,
but for him to succeed means a certain amount success for the Raiders.

McCown was named the starter for Saturday's game, according to the articles

I want the Culpepper episode to be over with as quickly as possible,
true. We disagree. I don't think Culpepper spells success for the
Raiders. Just the opposite actually. If he were to get the starting
job, we'll likely go through three QB's in one season. No thanks.
There's a reason why no other team wanted the guy.

Yup. Same for Plunkett. Same for Gannon. Those guys were washed up
too. Oh, you might as well throw Jerry Rice into the discussion too.
I think you have a bad habit of disagreeing with everyone just for the sake
of being different. Whatever! |

Since I refuse to translate anything french I'll just assume *avant* means
*sour.* What exactly makes a player *washed up?* Did his skill set
suddenly erode? At 30 I doubt that has happened. I think the logical
explanation was that due to his warrior mentality he tried to come back
from his injury too soon, as a lot of players do. Patience in healing is
not conducive to the very short life span of NFL players. At this point
I'd much rather have a veteran who's experienced tremendous success in the
past on the roster than a kid like Walter who's been beaten up and beaten
down without having ever been able to prove himself.
As for nobody else signing him, CPep is his own agent. Remember, the same
thing occurred with with him as did McNair. Stuck on a roster with a team
that had no confidence in him, and not being allowed to leave until most
of the rosters in the NFL were already settled at that skill position. He
is his own agent, and he chose where he was going to go based on his own
criteria. I am not saying that CPep is the second coming of Jim Plunkett,
but you'd never know if you didn't take the chance. Given that he is so
much like JaMarcus in many ways, it's natural that his veteran experience
and his past success will benefit Russell just by his presence and
leadership ability.
I think your opinion of him is shallow and short sighted. To compare him
to Brooks is ridiculous. The only thing those two have in common is the
color of their skin. While ethnicity is a passe factor in professional
sports these days, it could actually be a benefit where Russell is
concerned. CPep can offer him the *big brother* effect. This is about the
future of the Raiders, not the here and now. Any success this team has
this year is just a bonus. Our future is 2 or 3 years away. Laying the
building blocks for that now makes all the sense in the world.
