If in training camp he looks like he has in the Pro Bowl, get ready for the
Quinn era.
He was bad today.

Inaccurate..........like a lot of the season. And he got to throw is Pro
Bowl interception.
Hopefully, he's in someone else's training camp. |

The Browns won't not get anything close to the 1st/3rd round
picks designated for someone who wants to outbid the Browns
for DA's services. Perhaps some team will offer something
less that will be acceptable to Savage.
I fully expect Quinn to take over for DA in the starter's job,
either during training camp or shortly thereafter, once the
season starts. By then the pick(s) offered for DA will be for
the draft in April 2009. I'd settle for a veteran defensive
lineman with some mileage left.
Adrian Petersen turned out as advertised. Had we taken him
over Joe Thomas, we'd be talking about not having a tackle
right now. Joe Staley was taken out of Central Michigan
with the 28th pick in the 1st round last year. He started
every game with the 49ers, but I watched him against some
opponent late last season, and the guy opposite him got to
the 49er's QB for a few sacks. |

His stock has tumbled, that's for sure. But in a league where Vinny can
still land a job, someone may bite for a high second rounder. |

Petersen was BT's boy. Good call on him BT. And you KNEW if we passed over
him, he was a lock for the Hall of Fame. But nobody can argue picking Joe
Thomas. |

i honestly didn't think thomas would be as good as he's turned out to
be, but i still thought he was the best choice to fill our most
glaring need. and now it seems we have that hole filled for the next
10-12 years. that's not a bad thing.

No, and if I had to single out the most important thing in the success of
the season, it would be the offensive line. There were several factors, but
to me that was the most important. |

DA did look bad in the Pro Bowl, but keep in mind he hadn't played since
12/30, and was a late addition to the game. He was inaccurate during the
season, but not as inaccurate and as often as he was in the Pro Bowl. A
bit rusty I'd say.
Trading DA for a high 2nd and another pick or two is tempting, but is
that really the best move to make? I realize he had great receivers to
throw to, but he still got the ball out very quickly and threw for more
TD's than any Browns QB has since Brian Sipe (according to what I just
heard on ESPN's NFL Live).
Scenario 1: He's re-signed to a 3 or 4 year deal and not traded. In 2008
he would either be the starter or #2 on the depth chart, depending on
whether Quinn beats him out. That would not only give us depth, but also
ensure our backup is comfortable with the receivers & the system.
Scenario 2: DA leaves either by signing elsewhere or by getting traded,
leaving us with Quinn & Dorsey. Obviously, a veteran FA unfamiliar with
the system & his new teammates would need to be signed to back up Quinn.
Unless they want to go with Quinn, Dorsey, and rookie 4th or 6th round
draft pick to develop as the #3. It doesn't matter which to me (FA or
rookie), they both sound like risky options compared to keeping DA.
I don't expect Derek to ever develop into Joe Montana or Troy Aikman,
but I think trading him this year would be a year too soon. Let's see
what we have with Quinn first, if he can even beat out DA in TC. And who
knows, maybe a team will offer an outlandish deal to acquire Quinn. I
don't want to see him traded because I do think he could end up having a
great career, but for the right offer you never know. What if Miami or
another team offers their 2nd this year, 1st next year, and additional
picks/players? That would be outlandish and very tempting! |

even though quinn is still unproven, i have a hard time believing he
couldn't be successful given the stability of the OL, a healthy lewis,
and BE & KW2 as targets AND cribbs giving us decent field position
most of the time.

i personally would take that in a heartbeat, but if we got a top 5
prick, er, pick (freudian skip?) i would also try and trade that pick
down to draft multiple (2-3) front seven picks (DT & OLB) including
at least one guy at 16 or so with the first 50 picks.
the success the giants had being able to pressure the QB without
blitzing is probably going to place a premium on FA DL talent.

And lucky us. The area we need to focus on the most probably. There will
be competition for FA's, if there are even any out there that fit the
Browns' scheme.
On a sidenote:
If any of you didn't see NFL Network this evening, Mike Mayock gave his
top O-linemen. The player he really likes in that group is an OG named
Branden Albert out of Virginia. The clips they showed on him were
excellent. He can move and is a strong blocker. He's 6'7" and Mayock
said some scouts think he could even play LT. So we could use him as
either a RG or RT, and if Thomas goes down at some point, Albert could
possibly fill in at LT. As good as he is I doubt he lasts until our 2nd
round pick, but if he's there they should draft him imo.
As much as our O-line improved in '07, I don't believe that unit is
where it needs to be yet. Tucker & Shaffer should probably be replaced
as soon as possible. Tucker played admirably at RG but he's aging and is
playing out of position. Even if the team found a great RG and Tucker
went back to RT, he'd most likely retire in another year or two. As for
Shaffer, I don't believe he's fleet-footed enough to play OT. Hence all
the diving at players when he played LT, and occassionally when he
played RT last season. Use him as a backup possibly.
I wouldn't mind at all if every player the Browns drafted was a lineman,
either side of the ball. Unless Rashard Mendenhall's stock suddenly
falls, or Savage can trade up to get him. He looks like the real deal
to me.
Other than that, linemen, linemen, linemen. Although, we might need a TE
also if Winslow at some point demands a trade. No way do I want the
Browns to renegotiate his contract to give him more money. I'd rather
they trade him for a #1 plus more picks, which they could surely get,
rather than give him a new contract. I do like Winslow but I have a
feeling his time in Cleveland wont end on a good note. Too bad if that's
what happens.
