Capers and BB were two of the finalists to take over the Pats HC job
following the firing of Pete Carroll. Hiring BB proved to be the better
selection and Capers' HC career has been spotty. Still, he's a fine DC
and I like having him on board.
Per Reiss:
'Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick on Dom Capers:
"I have known Dom for a long time and respect him tremendously as a
coach, particularly defensively. To add a coach of his caliber is an
outstanding opportunity for us. I look forward to getting to work with
Dom and Dean [Pees] immediately."'

It is a great pick up. He knows the 3-4 but what kind of pay cut did
he take? He made $2.6 MM last year. BB makes me puke. |

Capers will take over if the guy who makes you puke gets suspended for a
year. |

Great pickup. I wonder if he's being set up to replace Pees when the
time comes, I don't think Belichick was thrilled with the defense last
year. |

Yeah, how could anyone be happy with the AARP brigade at LB resulting in
the #4 scoring defense? |

Or they expect that both BB and Pioli will get called in to either
testify in one forum or another or need to attend meetings, and
preparations for such proceedings will impact their preparation for
games and the season. |

Did it? I thought the defense played rather well. |

I joked about that w/ a Pats fan in my office.
You do not want Capers coaching your team. I assumed it was insuarnce
should their DC get promoted, |

Two ways to look at it, really.
On the one hand, in a low-scoring Super Bowl, they gave up 172 yards
and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. When they had several
chances to stop the Giants on the last drive, they just couldn't.
On the other hand, they only allowed 17 points in the Super Bowl and
only allowed 49 in three playoff games (16.3 average). They allowed
two big plays in the Super Bowl - the 45 yarder to Boss after Rodney
couldn't wrap him up (should have been about a 12-15 yard gain instead
of a 45 yarder and the ridiculous 32 yarder to Tyree that (a) should
have been a sack, (b) should have been an offensive penalty (2 holding
and 2 face masks...none of them were called), (3) should have been an
incompletion (how does he not drop that), and (d) *could* have been an
interception, given how Eli just heaved it up for grabs. In other
words, it took maybe the most miraculous play in NFL history for the
Giants to score on that drive.
So two ways to see it. Overall, they were very solid. Put it this
way: if you had been promised that the Pats would hold the Giants to
17 points, how much money would you have been willing to put on the
Patriots in that game? A thousand? A hundred thousand?

Former head coaches are being snapped up all over the NFL to fill
vacancies. Martz in SF, Mora in Seattle are just two that come to
mind. Since there are no cap limits on coaches why not hire the best
that are out there?
I don't see this as a just in case BB will be suspended or what not.
I see it as following a trend other teams have been doing for a few
years It's the classic Peter principle. |

I believe Capers is not as bad as people make him out.
Both of his HC gigs were start-from-scratch expansion franchises. In
one of them, he went 12-4 and won a playoff game in his 2nd season. In
the other, they could never get a solid OL together, but that can not be
pinned just on him as the situation has barely improved since he left.
In a pinch, we could do a lot worse. |

As a DC good, asst great, head coach , idiot.
He was clueless. As for the OL, the 1st year they were bad, 2nd year
they improved, 3rd year they got worse than year 1 because Dom brought
in Joe Pendry to teach zone blocking which he had never coached
before. Capers had 2 years to get ready for year one & that is why the
Texans were sort of ready for year one. |
