Senator James Webb of Virginia is a factor, but for what

If Barack Obama wants to run up the score versus McCain, he would do
well to select Senator James Webb from Virginia as his vice
presidential candidate. Webb seems almost the ideal choice for
someone who could credibly savage the current administration's foreign
policy and counter whatever points McCain might make on security
issues.

But it's not clear running up the score in this election is what Obama
would want. Webb is I believe 62 years old, so would Webb be capable
eight years from now of trying to continue Obama's legacy? Would Webb
even accept if offered the position? Webb is one of the fastest
rising stars in the Democratic Party, but does he have the time to
become a leader in the Senate. If Webb were to leave the Senate,
would his seat remain in the hands of the Democrats after the next
election for that seat?

But there would be even less reason for Webb to leave the Senate if it
were only to be for a position such as Secretary of Defense, because
most Cabinet positions do not remain stable a full eight years.

Maybe Webb is the Democrats' fallback position for 2012 if McCain
somehow wins.

No way McCain will win. He runs the gimmicky spread offense.

Webb's not particularly charismatic. I'm not sure how well he plays
on the national stage.
