I say play him on Sunday, no matter if he is in game shape or not. Even if
its for just one down, throw him the damn ball, give him a short touchdown
toss. He deserves to go out in style. We're toast this year anyway, let's
get something positive out of this last game.

Long live Rod.

He can barely walk right now, much less play.

We'll miss you Rod.

The Broncos site has an article saying the same stuff, but here's a snipped end
part that starts where the posted link article ends. Can you imagine, TO, Moss,
or any of those "top" receivers saying and feeling anything similar to those
last 5 paragraphs? I durn near mist up a little. As we've said before, the
ultimate team player.

"Honestly, I (played) for a while without knowing it was probably doing more
damage than good to (the hip)," he said. "My mentality is what kept me here this
long, being able to withstand pain and play hurt, but when you get injured, it's
a different thing.

"That same tenacity that helped me stay in the league this long is probably
going to take me out of the league."

Smith's acceptance of his own nature has helped him come to peace with the idea
that his last game in a Broncos uniform may have come 12 months ago, and that
Sunday's contest against the Minnesota Vikings might be his final game in any
capacity as a player.

"I was always told that you play this game as long as you can," he said, "and if
I've played my last football game, I did that, so I'm okay with that.

"My last game as a professional athlete with the Denver Broncos could be this
Sunday. That in itself is really emotional, but at the same time, I'm blessed to
be here this long."

And, Smith hopes it could be longer, in whatever capacity the future holds. That
could still be as a player; returning to the field if he opts for the hip
resurfacing procedure is a possibility. But if that doesn't happen, he wants to
stay connected to the Broncos in some way.

"I like teaching. But the coaches, their hours are too long. If they could
adjust the hours a little bit and I could get paid the same," he said, his voice
trailing off in laughter.

"The Denver Broncos have been a huge part of my life and there's nothing I
wouldn't do to help get us back to where we belong and that's something (about
which) I'd have to talk to Mr. (Pat) Bowlen and (Head Coach) Mike (Shanahan) and
the people who make those kinds of decisions. There might not be a position or
whatever -- depending on what kind of capacity they'd need me in. I'd have to
evaluate that if that's the case.

"Right now, I don't know if that's the case. But there's nothing I wouldn't do
for the Denver Broncos, period, that would get us back to where we belong."

He'd make a helluva receivers coach. If he could instill half of the
work ethic that he possesses himself into our young receivers, we'd
have a great corp. But it sounds like he isn't ready to go to work
yet. Give him a year or so to let boredom set in and he might be ready
to coach.
