Here's the first indication that the point Trapani and I were discussing
last week concerning the hiring of replacement coaches can go as some
reports have suggested they would.

The Seahawks have hired Chris Beake as their offensive quality control
coach. Beake will replace Gary Reynolds, who left Mike Holmgren's staff to
join Nolan Cromwell at Texas A&M. Beake used to be Jim Mora's linebacker's
coach in Atlanta. He is expected to possibly take on even more
responsibility next season when Mora becomes HC.

The three musketeers (Ruskell, Holmgren, and Mora) can hire coaches that
will satisfy Holmgren this season and not just be a one year stopgap measure
until Mora takes over. That should alleviate some concerns posted in this
newsgroup last week about how we're still in Lame Duck status next season
because coaches that we hire to replace those that have left will be only
one year contracts. I said there were indications that Holmgren and Mora
would cooperate and select coaches that would remain on after Holmgren
leaves giving the team stability and continuity.

This is the first one.

What I said was that either the guy will be a lame duck hire for one
year or a Mora hire who may not work well with Holmgren at all this
coming season. That was my worst fear, hiring guys for two seasons away
and let Holmgren go hang.

This guy looks like a Mora hire for sure, but the question is, how happy
is Holmgren with it? Any information about that? He doesn't have a
crucial position, that's good I guess.

Well I guess the truth of it is that neither you nor I have any way of
really knowing how it came down and happy Holmgren is with this hire or any
others that come in the future in a similar fashion. One thing I would
assume though is that if Holmgren were going to be the coach for another 5
years, it might make more of a difference but for the one remaining season,
if a coach is qualified and he doesn't have any problems working with him,
it might not be worth the distinction.

For example, if I need a new trombone player in my band, I know of two or
three guys who can do the job. Each has his strengths and weaknesses but all
three would do a great job if I needed to hire him. In reality, it doesn't
make any difference who I hire because they all bring the right stuff to the
band and I can work with the strength and around the weakness of any one of
the three. The band will sound equally good in any of the three cases. I may
personally like one guy a little better because he's more of a personal
friend and I'd like to hang with him more but as far as the band is
concerned and it's performances, that's not something that makes a
difference.

I'm sure there's more than one coach that can fill the shoes of the vacant
spots and do a very good job. If Holmgren is the only one making the
decision he might go with one particular guy but in fact, he could get along
with any one of maybe two or three different guys. If one of them is also a
good fit for Mora, it's to Holmgren's credit that he can and will make the
adjustment and give the franchise a chance to maintain continuity. Most
likely at the level that the new coaches are coaching, it's really not going
to make a difference to the team overall. It might make a small difference
to Holmgren if he were going to stay for some personal reason but for the
good of the franchise, if he's willing to move aside those personal
considerations, he just gets a bigger chunk of my respect for it. OTOH, if
there's a coach that's a clear choice above others applying for the
position, Mora would be a fool not to keep him on his staff next year if he
wants' to maximize his chances of succeeding when he takes over.

I just don't see the problem that you seem to want to make out of the
situation Stephen. You seem to want to intentionally disbelieve that the
three principals are working in harmony and making long term decisions that
are good for the short term as well because there's never been a situation
in the NFL quite like this one where a coach is leaving voluntarily and the
new coach is on his staff and everything is still in harmony and
balance.Usually, it's turned all upside down because the current coach is
losing his job due to the team doing poorly and tensions are high and
cooperation's at a standstill with everyone guarding his own future closely
and jealously running rampant. Just because you have a guy who is in a class
all by himself in Holmgren, don't go and hang all the inadequacies of other
coaches on him because they couldn't handle the degree of cooperation
displayed by him so far and throw petty jealousies aside to work with
another coach in making hiring decisions they can both live with. Holmgren
will be the greatest coach in this franchise's history for a long time to
come if for no other reason because he truly had the team's best interests
at heart and lived by that philosophy to the very end. Most guys his age get
fairly close minded about new ideas and new ways of doing things but he has
shown the whole league a new way of making a changeover and how it can work
if everyone really has the team's interests at the top of the list instead
of their own. He's such an icon and comfortable that his own reputation is
already legend that he can afford to be magnanimous and generous to a fault
in his last year here and I expect a truly amazing season if they will just
get the players he needs to fix the major offensive problems. I also expect
Mora to inherit a well oiled machine that he just needs to not be dismantled
in any way before he gets it on the road. He needs to understand that if it
ain't broke, he shouldn't be messing with it but that's another subject
entirely. Holmgren is showing him the way to success this season and it's up
to him to learn the lessons and put them into practice when he's the boss.

*Snip*

I am having a hard time getting involved in these long discussions, but
would like to just say that I don't see Holmgren needing to compromise if he
did not want to. I personally am happy with the transition here. We have a
friendly transfer of power, from the old school Holmgren to a young
defensive minded coach with a strong pedigree. So far I am very optimistic!
