Regarding the issue of stealing signals, stadium noise problems, and
stuff like that, I ask the following: Why not allow the players to
have data-encrypted walkie-talkies in their helmets? That way they
can all communicate with each other and nobody else knows what they
are saying. The coaches could also have such equipment also for
instant communication with the players. This would cause some
interesting changes in the game that may or may not be desireable.

Along the same lines we could put an inertial position sensor in the
ball with corresponding equipment on the field to accurately measure
first downs and augment scoring decisions to reduce error in marginal
cases. The technology is probably available to do this with
reasonable cost and without affecting the gameplay.

Or do you think that any such techie equipment would detract from the
blood-and-guts nature of the game?

Just a thought.
