OK. interesting to me, at least.. .

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/index

Quote...

"The punishment went beyond the confiscated Jets tapes. The tapes and
notes dated as far back as 2002 and the NFL said in October that
Belichick acknowledged to Goodell that there had been spying since he
became New England's coach in 2000."

I had not seen any reference to the above in any other new article or
press release...

Puts to bed the argument that it (Jet's game) was an isolated incident..

Also interesting is that the 'spying' started prior to any Patriots SB
wins...

Maybe now that the press is done catering to the "Perfect Pats"
somebody will step up and start reporting facts for a change. The NFL
will try to continue putting the kebosh on reporting what happened in
the investigation, because as history teaches...the coverup is usually
worse than the crime. I find it mildly interesting that this "all
comes out" on the "new guy's" first day on the job, so to speak.
The plot thickens...

How long until someone reminds Specter that the news agency the tape was
leaked to (Fox) also happens to be where Goodell's wife works?

One of the early 'rumors' was that Belichick agreed to accept responsibility
and Goodells punishment so long as the matter would end there. Belichick was
'rumored' to have told Goodell that if the matter didn't end there, that he
(Belichick) would go ahead and spill the beans about EVERY 'cheating' info
that he knew of since he entered the league. Don't forget that Belichick use
to work for Bill Parcells and has been in the league for a long time; The
filming of other teams was a commonly known practice in the league; and the
Patriots aren't the only team in the league to have engaged in 'cheating'.
Maybe it would be in the leagues best interest if the matter were droppped
and everyone just moved on.....

Well, Duncan, you and I haven't seen eye to eye in this forum at times
but I agree with you. I have heard this rumor. I mean, I have been
saying what you said from the time Goodell destroyed the tapes and
punished the Pats. In the interest of the NFL, let's move on. I have
been saying this from that day forward but I have been shouted down. I
mean, like you said, Bellichick used to work for the Giants. Bellichick
and the Pats did NOT invent signal stealing. They are not the only team
to have done this. Bellichick must have learned this from
someone/somewhere. I mean, thinking logically, does this make the NY
GIANTS "cheaters" too? If the rumor is true and Bellichick blows the
whistle on Parcells, I guess Bills fans and Broncos fans will be wanting
to know where THEIR SB rings are at. If the rumor is true, who know who
else Bellichick would blow the whistle on.

I just think this Senator is better off letting this matter drop. Like
I said, he is a disgruntled Eagles fan and his biggest constituent is
Comcast....besides I don't think people who like the idea that he is
getting involved in this would be happy with him if he and his
colleagues took away the NFL's antitrust protection or whatever.
They take that away, over Spygate, it would be a disaster.

The NFL does not have anti trust protection... which is why there have been the
'AFL', the 'XFL', the 'WFL', 'the USFL', and a few other fls....
only baseball has the antitrust thing going for them, thus Congress has given
itself a level of control over baseball and the policing of the game that
football and basketball and hockey do not have... therefore Spector's inquiries
into the patticakes and belliaches misconduct is no where as serious as if he
were checking into the activities of the red sox or the nationals....

Well, well, well. If this rumor is true, I guess Mangini isn't such a
rat after all. Pats trolls will have to eat crow for that one too. And
if it is true, you can bet that all of the cheating coaches are
destroying tapes as we speak...and that's a good thing.
I'm guessing Ditka doesn't have any skeletons in the closet...he was
one of the few who was relentless in saying this wouldn't go away
anytime soon, no matter what Belichick said, this would stick to him
for the rest of his career.
But something needs to be done to "clean up" the sport if, in fact;
plenty of teams are guilty of illegal signal stealing, and everybody
is hush-hush, because if one gets caught, they're gonna rat everybody
out! That's organized crime. It's a damn shame when people can't be
thankful that they get to play a game and get paid millions to do it,
and they refuse to do it on the up-and-up.

If the best you can do is quote people not even in the conversation and
completely unrelated to the topic at hand, then I really pity your lack
of parentage. Coming from a defective gene pool must really be a rotten
way to live.

YOu didn't think Mangini DIDN'T know what was going on during his stint
as defensive coach/assistant under Bellichick did you? Mangini , I have
said all along is not the hero in this mess that STeeler fans and Pats
haters have made him out to be. I do not care what anyone says.....he
knew!!! Crenell did too! Had to. THat is just pure logic. He was
Defensive coordinator.

I do agree that something should be done to clean up the sport of this.
I think if Senator Specter is insistant on hearings and getting his face
on tv that there should be a LEAGUE WIDE investigation of ALL 32 TEAMS.
Yes, I said it. ALL 32 TEAMS, INCLUDING the STEELERS. Let's not let 31
teams skate just because one team got caught.

The argument that because the Patriots cheat, then all teams cheat is a
weak argument.

That's like saying that if one Pats fan is a homosexual, then all Pats
fans are homosexuals..

I am just interested in a level playing field, if there is PROOF that
other teams are cheating, then they should also be punished.. that
includes all 31 other teams.. I am not in favor of singling out the
Patriots, but I AM in favor of harsh penalties for cheating that has
been 'proven', NOT alleged.. Proven is the key word..

Dan,
You're missing my point. As soon as this all started, Belichick
defenders were calling Mangini everything imaginable for ratting out
Belichick. So, if that is how they feel, they must then feel the same
way about their beloved coach if indeed, he threatened to do the very
same thing.
If the shoe fits...wear it.
That's what I'm saying...nothing more.
