League admits to officiating miscues
Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS -- The NFL has informed Saints coaches that officials made
three critical incorrect calls -- all costly to the Saints -- in New
Orleans' 23-20 overtime loss to Carolina last Sunday.
The first blown call would have, if correct, given the Saints a 2-0
lead. On Carolina's first possession, Jake Delhomme threw a backhanded
pass out of his own end zone as he was being brought down.
Referee Mike Carey, the crew chief, initially threw a flag, but then
picked it up, ruling that an eligible receiver was in the vicinity. In a
post-game report, officials admitted there was no eligible receiver in
the area of the incompletion and the play should have resulted in a
safety.
The next mistake led directly to a Panthers go-ahead touchdown late in
the fourth quarter. Saints cornerback Fred Thomas was called for
defensive pass interference against Walter Young on the play, but
officials admitted that Young initiated the contact by pulling Thomas'
helmet. Instead of a first-and-goal at the Saints' 18, the Panthers had
a first-and-goal at the 1. On the next play, Stephen Davis scored the
go-ahead touchdown.
Then in overtime, officials said Panthers linebacker Lester Townes
should have been called for defensive holding when he tackled running
back Deuce McAllister in pass coverage on the Saints' second play of
overtime. No penalty was called, and quarterback Aaron Brooks scrambled
for a 2-yard gain. The infraction would have given the Saints an
automatic first down at the Carolina 38-yard line. Instead, they faced a
third-and-5 at the Carolina 41. New Orleans reached the 37 on third down
but failed to convert a fourth-and-1, setting up Carolina's winning
drive.

How many times have the Saints been on the other side of bad calls?
Gawd, I am sick of reading and hearing Saint fans whine about the calls.
Bad calls are part of the game. Instead of whining of the bad calls, the
Saint fans need to whine about dropped passes, their #1 RB Douche not
making a first down and fumbling in the process, and defensive
breakdowns. BLaming the refs is lame. Hasslet needs to do things to make
his team better....not whine about the past.

There were 3 horrible calls, 2 of which were critical to the outcome of the
game, and 1 of which that was right the first time before the ref picked
up the flag. ESPN thought enough about it to put it on the front page of
their
website. Go back to your own group and cheer on your Carolina
Asterisks' attempt to get a moderately low first round pick, and quit
insulting players that did nothing to deserve ridicule.

It's one thing to chalk up a loss to bad calls and just move on because
there is nothing we can do about it, BUT... it is another thing entirely
when the refs demonstrate that they don't even have a firm grasp of the
rules of the game like they did against Carolina. It wasn't that the refs
just plain old missed the calls, they didn't have a clue what the correct
call should have been. That is unforgiveable for a ref, they should ALL
be terminated immediately.

The Saints should have made plays....and not allow an RB to run 180
yards on them. You lost because your team failed to make plays.

Geezzeee, stop whining. Do you whine when the calls go your way? Do you
demand justice for the other team? Did you whine when Ricky Williams
scored that TD at the end of regulation several years ago when there was
clearly offensive holding that allowed Williams to make the turn? Come
on. You lost the game because of plays YOUR TEAM DID NOT MAKE. Just like
when we lost to the Ricky Williams Saints game. We did not make the
plays. You want to win games? Do not allow an RB to run 180 yards on you.

Lets not forget the call that put the Panthers in 1st and 25 when it should
of been 10 yards and first and 15. That stalled a pretty critical drive of
Carolina's as well.
I can't quite remember what happened but the TV's guys said it was wrong
too.

But, the Saint fans don't see that. All they want to do is whine. They
did not make the plays. Don't blame the refs. The Panthers have had many
bad calls, but making plays will defeat bad officiating.
