....we won't be going on to DC--Anna went out on peregrinate. If
anyone wants further details, feel free to email me off-list. Smile

Tempe/Phoenix judged, found to be soulless. Ralph Kennedy judged...a
lot of fun to talk to on the phone.

I don't know how much I'll be posting... this group is morphing again,
and that's not always a good thing. I guess it's that off-season
mood. My friends know where to find me.

Did you ask her to spell "disappointment" afterwards?

Soulless is a good word.

It is. I find it to be kind of dull. It doesn't hurt to check in
every so often however.

Heh...I was disappointed for about 3 minutes. Then I looked around at
the kids that were doing really well. Spelling is their life, and it
shows. Anna has way too many other interests--she only does well
because she reads so much and has a memory like mine.

Dull...combative... something like that.

I tried to email you, but I think I used the wrong address--your

I don't mean this in a denigrating way, because I enjoy word games,
spelling bees, etc. But for a while now I've marveled at just how much
time, energy, and expense is devoted to spelling things properly in the
English language. As I've gotten older, the fact that English spelling
is so strange and complex that you can make an interesting *contest* out
of it just strikes me as weirder and weirder. If I were dictator, one
of the first things I would do would be to change things to a phonetic
alphabet. I wonder if anyone has ever quantified the overall cost of
spelling things correctly (proofreading, editing, dealing with mistakes
and miscommunications, etc.) in our economy...I bet it's a huge number.
Or how much time students spend on spelling instead of learning other
things.

I definitely see your point, because there is no rhyme or reason to
it....suffixes and the like really blow my mind. "ant" or "ent" or
"ious" or "eous" or "eus," etc. Then we have prefixes like "il" or
"el" or "im" or "em." I looked at Anna's list and I knew there was no
way one could learn them all without knowing every definition and
derivation, etc. (Because of how the English language is.)

The other kid who went from her school went out on the word "otiose,"
which is pronounced ô-shç-ôs with an alternative pronunciation of ô-tç-
ôs, but because he didn't ask for the alternative pronunciation, he
biffed it.

Oops--that didn't work... OH-SHE-OHS and OH-TEA-OHS... the diacritics
didn't make the translation.

Also if I were dictator I'd probably base the new phonetic alphabet on
cyrillic just in the hopes of annoying you.

Would you please also pass a lemon law on software? The only thing
more impressive than Gates' fortune is the amount of time, money,
energy people and businesses have wasted in supporting terrible
software over the past 20 years or so. It would be one thing if the
problems were legitimate, but when many are the result of purposeful
sabotage of their OS's in the name of "business" and things like
"Easter Eggs" in the code, the wasted dollars have consumed billions
on their own.

I understand that it's their own code and they can with it what they
wish, but I doubt many of the companies and people who bought said
software knew how much support and expense has been consumed by
purposeful gimics (read the Microsoft v. Minnesota case notes for
interesting tidbits on their "business tactics").

We kan also get rid of the letters C, Q and X entirely. We kud maybe keep C
but it would be relegated to be used only for the "ch" sound.

And all silent letters are dead karakters walking too.

It is also a relatively recent phenominon. People misspelled words
for years in writing because they basically thought the actual
spelling wasn't that big a deal. These dorks (and yes that is what
they are) that devote their lives to spelling obscure words correctly
are just odd. I feel sorry for them.

I don't think I have ever said, "It's how you play the game that
matters" before. View it as a "win". Y'all got to be together with the
daughter competing. At some age parents get very dumb - enjoy the
before and after when they get smarter.

Ultimately there is no reason a normal person can't be outstanding in
anything that interests him enough to really try. And you never lose
until you quit because there is always someone who won't quit. Beat
'em or outlast 'em.

No one in my family is as good an athelete as I thought they should
be; no one is the student I thought they should be. But the three on
their own are very successful at this stage of their lives.

Apparently she has very good habits. That's a real plus these days.

I hope I live to see my grand and greatgrand daughters reach your
daughter's age. I've never been around young girls.
