Lewis wants to finish as Brown
The Cleveland Plain Dealer
by Mike Conley

Running back Jamal Lewis would like to sign a multi-year deal with the
Browns that would enable him to finish his career in Cleveland, Lewis'
agent Mitch Frankel said Monday.

"Jamal feels he can play three years at a very, very high level and even
beyond that," Frankel said. "His goal is to be able to work out a
contract with the Browns and remain there for the rest of his career. We
have one month before the start of free agency to make that goal a reality."

The Browns have made Lewis a proposal that's believed to be for two
years. If the two sides can't come to terms, Lewis will become an
unrestricted free agent on Feb. 29.

"Jamal was one of only three players who rushed for 1,300 yards and had
nine or more touchdowns in 2007," Frankel said. "The other two were [San
Diego's] LaDainian Tomlinson and [Minnesota's] Adrian Peterson. We have
30 days to work out an equitable contract."

Asked if he was confident a deal can get done based on the proposal,
Frankel said, "I'm hopeful something can be worked out. It was the
Browns' initial proposal. Every negotiation has to have a starting point."

For comparison's sake, Tomlinson made about $5 million last season and
Peterson about $4.54 million. Lewis signed a one-year deal worth $3.5
million, but made an extra $1.5 million in incentives.

"When Jamal first visited the Browns last year, he was confident it
would be a good fit for him," Frankel said. "That proved to be right and
Jamal really wants to stay in Cleveland."

Browns General Manager Phil Savage's motto for Lewis all last season was
"a hungry Jamal is a good Jamal," which is probably why they offered him
only a two-year deal.

i think lewis can definitely still contribute. i wouldn't expect him
to remain the workhorse for more than a couple more seasons despite
how he takes care of himself, but it'd be nice to be proved wrong on
that. the bottom line is that he's proven to be a great clubhouse
presence and that's worth a lot to me, so if he evolved into a
bettis-type role eventually that would be cool with me.

Savage's knowledge of Jamal Lewis while he was still in B'more is serving
him and the Browns organization well. He recalls (as I stated earlier this
past season) how Jamal tends to get lazy with a long term contract. Jamal
desires that long term contract so he can slack off again like he did with
the Ravens. He doesn't want to have to keep working as hard as he did last
season ...every season.

Definitely give him a one or two season contract laden with incentive
earnings, if he balks or some team offers him more let him walk ...you won't
regret it.

Jamal was an important part of the Brown's success this year. If he
wants a 3 year deal, I wouldn't have a problem with him getting that.
Just make the 2nd year and especially the 3rd year incentive laden.
He'll get a good sized bonus, and alot of guaranteed money in the first
year of the contract, which will make it more likely he'd accept
incentives in the 2nd & 3rd years.

Considering the Browns aren't picking until #53 in the draft, and the
backups can't really be considered A1-type starters, I think signing
Jamal makes sense.

I don't know what the problem was in Baltimore his last couple of years,
but I have confidence in him that he'll continue working hard for the
Browns.

That's my concern also, Sarge. Even more of a concern is him getting
injured next year. The Browns had good luck in that department, although
Jamal did hurt his foot.

If the Browns get Jamal to agree an incentive-laden contract, it'll
protect the team in the long run. And they could maybe give him a bigger
bonus upfront if he agrees to it. Could be a win-win situation.

i suspect the main concern is that a long term contract might lead to
complacence on lewis' part. that may or may not have been true in
baltimore.
