Wow, the annual draft discussions have begun already.

As usual somene starts with an innocent "what do you think our priorities
are in the draft", then it is on for young and old.

I see an early trend where our need for pass defense is weighed up against
our receiving corp. I welcome these discussion but I really feel this
discussion must be looked from a wider perspective and see the bigger
picture.

What I am saying that these discussions should be prefaced by assessing our
needs, then laying them out in priority order. We dont have to have a
strict sequence we can have groupings. e.g. 1st Tier priority:
Receiver & Pass Rusher 2nd Tier: Veteran/ Back-up QB & O/L 3rd Tier
C/Back.

THEN

we determine the best way to address those needs.

A. Free agency
B. The draft
C. Develope existing players or change defensive / offensive schemes.

SO carrying on from that theme, our most pressing need may be to improve our
receivers yet in may be neccessary to try that through free agency. Why?
Because I have heard that there is a strong crop of D/ends in the draft. We
may get some value at #17 pick. However W/R may be exhausted by then.

So I would like to see draft discussions addressing the alternatives of free
aganecy as well.

Thoughts?

If you want a stud DE, you need to grab him in the first round. There
are three or four who will probably go in the first.
Criss Long (Won't last till 17)
Vaughn Gholson - OSU
Derrick Harvey - Fla.
You can find good WR's in any round, witness Greg Jennings (2),
Colston (7) Driver (7), etc.

There are plenty of great pass-rushers who were drafted in the mid to
late rounds.

Jared Allen was a 4th-rounder. Aaron Kampman was a 5th-rounder.

That said, as I stated in another thread I am all in favour of going
after a pass-rushing DE in the 1st round this year. We should be able
to get someone who is a major upgrade from Ray Edwards.

I think the Vikings have had little luck drafting DE's in the first
round. Udeze...James...how many more do we have to pick in the first
round till we find one that is productive. At this point I would rather
have them pick up an established DE. I don't know if any will be
available via FA, so the draft may be their only option.

Not sure of which "order" but Childress needs to keep the defense
fierce, and pick up a legit pass rusher for sure. The rest of the D
should be okay, though another cb couldn't hurt. On offense, it's
obvious, a real wideout either from free agency, or snag a winner in the
draft. Either grab a TE or maybe just actually implicate a play
Childress for the ones you do have. And I'd start looking around for
another good O-lineman as some of our guys are so overrated. And lastly,
it's time to get a "count on" back up or potential starting qb with a
last name more realiable than Holcomb, or Bollinger.
TJ still hasn't shown the signs that he's the go to guy at qb.
