He wasn't franchised by the Bears and will become an unrestricted free
agent on Feb 29. He's excellent, and the Pats seem to have a need at
LB. Suppose Seau retires...how hard do they go after Briggs? He
plays OLB in the 4-3 defense, so I suppose that makes him an OLB in
the 3-4 as well. A 3-man OLB rotation of Vrabel, Colvin, and Briggs,
with a 3-man ILB rotation of A. Thomas, Bruschi, and Z. Thomas, with
two youngsters as the 7th and 8th guys on the depth chart. That would
be pretty nice.

Too much money in backup players. Colvin would be the most expensive backup
in football. Besides, I'd rather have Samuel than Briggs, and they'll
probably go for about the same price.
If they're going to add an OLB to take over for Colvin, I'd prefer it come
from the draft. This Gholston guy sounds good. Then you let Colvin play
out his contract while grooming the new guy and rotating him in. |

Apparently the Niners want him...... enough that they are being
investigated by the league for tampering for trying to work out a deal with
his agent last year while he was still under contract to the Bears. Damn
cheaters. |

MZ don't you get the feeling that the Pats D has lost its ability to
scare its opponents like it used to. IMHO throwing crazy money at
Samuel, who is an excellent cover corner, will really make the Pats D
any better than it was this past year. From my limited understanding
of the game, I am of the opinion that cover corners tend to do thrive
in systems where there is explosiveness in the D-line and Linebackers.
This season other than Vrabel, Wilfork and perhaps Seau, the Pats
lacked stellar play from its linebackers and defensive linemen. Unless
these problems are addressed either by dthe draft or free agency,
breaking the bank on Samuel, who IMHO is not as elite a defender as
Bob Sanders, may not actually help the Pats improve as a team
