Browns sign Lewis

By Zac Jackson

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Browns reached one of the their most important offseason
goals Thursday, finalizing a new three-year contract for running back Jamal
Lewis.

"The Browns are pleased that Jamal has decided to continue his career here
in Cleveland," said Phil Savage, Cleveland Browns Senior Vice President and
General Manager. "He brings a maturity, toughness and football temperament
to the team that is critical to our success on top of the physical abilities
that he possesses. Plus, he'll have the opportunity to go over 10,000+
career yards in 2008, which will put him in elite company."

Working on a one-year deal in his first year with the team last year, Lewis
proved to be a solid fit in Rob Chudzinski's new offense and a valuable
veteran addition to a young locker room. He rushed for 1,304 yards and 9
touchdowns as the team's feature back, highlighted by a 216-yard day in the
Browns' home win over the Bengals. He also scored twice and totaled 156
yards against his former team as the Browns swept the Ravens for the first
time since 2001.

"One of the important things for any football team, and any offense, is
continuity, and re-signing Jamal allows us to have some of that continuity,"
said Chudzinski. "I'm excited about having him back. We asked him last year
to do some things that maybe he hadn't done much of before, such as running
outside, or hadn't done for a long time, and he embraced it. He did
everything we asked him to do. His numbers tell you that he was one of the
top runners in the league, but he was just as good when it came to being a
good influence in our locker room."

Lewis, who will turn 29 just before the start of the 2008 season, was
especially good in December. He went over 100 yards in three of the Browns'
last four games, sealed the Jets' win with a late breakaway touchdown and
ground out 163 yards in a blizzard in the Browns' 8-0 win over the Bills.

If the dollar figure(s) are right, ...and I assume they are, ...congrats on
the signing.

However... now comes the really interesting part.

I think he had a bad relationship with super coach over there.

I watched a good interview on the NFL network yesterday. Lewis and Crennel
presented themselves very well, and sound excited about the future.

One key comment. They were showing highlights of DA. Shortly afterwards,
Romeo was quizzed about Brady Quinn. His answer was, "Brady is going to be
a fine NFL quarterback, a fine quarterback for the Cleveland Browns."

that's more positive than something casey stengel said about one of
his players, something like: "... yeah, he's 20 years old, next year
he's got a chance to be 21."

We know that as fact in B'more.

However that was the case with many of Billick's players and the fault lies
with Billick's himself for being too much of a players coach. He was soft on
them and they got soft as a result. Which of course is why Billick is no
longer in B'more. I'd wager Jamal would still be in B'more had Billick left
a season earlier. Like Billick's coaches who took the heat and the pink
slips for his failings, I believe Jamal was as much a product of that as he
was for getting to cozy after signing a long term deal with B'more.

That still doesn't dismiss the fact that Jamal did not look like the Jamal
of old ...until... he became a Cleveland Brown for a season and working for
a continued career as well as a contract. Thus my comments.

I haven't seen the amount or the terms of Jamal's contract. If his contract
remains incentive based/laced then he will be forced to perform and perhaps
that will be the Browns saving grace regarding him and a 3 year contract.

Away from soft players coach and buddy Brian Billick and under the watchful
eye of Savage I think perhaps not, ...especially if his contract is
essentially incentive driven as Savage eluded to in the past.

For the sake of you Browns fans I hope he doesn't prove me correct. But keep
a watchful eye for him taking himself out of the game as Billick allowed him
to do in B'more and usually when we most needed him.

I remember Jamal crying over wanting the ball more than 25 carries per game.
After Billick gave him 34 in one game Jamal was crying that he couldn't
carry the team on his back with that many carries... go figure.

Like McGahee I think Jamal still feels he has a little more to prove. Once
that feeling is over for both I wouldn't place bets on either.

To the contrary... not one player had a bad relationship with Billick. That
wasn't in him. He was the ultimate over-example of a player(s) head coach.
He protected his players from management as well as furious Ravens fans.

I see. That can keep players from being motivated.
