Something is really bugging me about the whole Matt Walsh story. If,
somehow, a tape of the Rams' pre-Super Bowl walk-through were to show up in
his possession, would you not have to ask yourself "what's he doing with the
tape?" If, as he claims, he was employed by the team to secretly take
footage of the Rams as they prepared for the game, wouldn't he have turned
that tape over to the coaching staff? I doubt that they would have given it
back to him when they were done. So why would he have it?
It's also not the sort of thing I would expect someone to make a copy of as
some kind of souvenir. And there's certainly no way in 2001 he could ever
have anticipated the firestorm that erupted at the beginning of the season
in 2007. So, unlike in Brian Macnamee's case, it seems highly illogical
that Walsh would have stashed away "incriminating evidence" for potential
extortion/blackmail/ass-covering purposes seven years into the future.
It is possible that he had his own personal video camera with him and was
just shooting footage of the whole pre-Super Bowl atmosphere and caught some
of the Rams walk-through. And maybe he knew what he had and maybe he didn't
but later figured it out. That would explain why he would be in possession
of the footage (if, indeed, he is). It's not necessarily the sort of thing
you would erase or record over but, again, probably also not the sort of
thing you would make a personal copy of if the original tape belonged to
someone else (i.e. the team).
Of course, all of this is predicated on the assumption that a tape even
exists, that Walsh has it, and it will somehow turn up. So far, that has
not been the case. Something tells me it won't ever be the case.
