So, what do you all think of Max Starks getting the transition tag? He
is being tagged for almost 7 million.

That would be a sign of a team that is well aware of a big problem that they
face. No question the neglect of management to assure a continued good offensive
line is now biting new management in the butt...

My guess is that they probably should have sat Starks down and said 4 million
and watch him jump on it... but maybe they did and his agent is smart enough to
know that the Steelers line is in jeopardy and that we need Starks more then
Stark needs us...

Show him the money!

Prediction: Starks either kicks ass in camp or he's unemployed...

Strickland,

I agree with you that management is realizing that the O line is in deep
doo doo.....especially if they are going to throw alot of money at
Roethlisberger. I mean, if they do not fix that O Line......all that
money they throw at Roethlisberger may go down the tubes with one poor
performance by that O Line if you get my drift. All it takes is one
missed assignment, one missed block..... Anyway, it does look like they
need Starks badly because it is obvious that Faneca will be gone.

I think its more a financial ploy. He will signed to a longer term
deal before the season starts that will make him less actual ca$h, but
will include a signing bonus; none of the transition tag monies can be
a bonus. The use of the tag merely allows us to match other offers he
might receive.

This combined with working a long term deal with Kemoeatu, stabilizes
the OL and prevents us from reaching for OLers on the first day of the
draft.

The whole thing is really pretty clever.

For the record, I think we will see Starks at LT and Smith back to
right. Oddly, the natural position for both...

Now all we have to do is draft a center and move our center to his standard
"guard" position!

It just means the Steelers will have the right to match any offer Starks
gets. Once Starks gets an offer acceptable to him, the $7 million tag is
worthless. He'll probably get more than $7 million in a signing bonus for a
long term deal, he is only 26 years old. This gives the Steelers a chance to
see what Starks is worth on the open market and if they (Steelers) will be
willing to match it. http://news.steelers.com/article/87243/

I'm really curious to see what the Steelers will do this off-season. I have
some doubts about whether Tomlin & company actually know what they are doing
on the offensive side of the ball. I hope I'm wrong but we need help on the
OL and I think Willie Parker needs the help of a FB. After watching the
Giants win a SB using a solid 4-3 pass rush (like the 70's Steelers used)
I'm wondering if maybe it's time to set the 3-4 aside.
It's really a tough position for the Steelers to be in - they're currently
a GOOD team but not a GREAT team. The player personel they currently have
doesn't match-up perfectly with any thing but the system they've been
running, a system that produced a GOOD team but not a GREAT team. So do they
stick with being a GOOD team and keep the fans happy or do they start a
system switch which causes them to go through a minor re-building phase,
which will have the fans calling for MT's head, before they can be a GREAT
team? Maybe the desire to go into a minor re-building phase is the reason
the OL doesn't seem to be a priority? We'll just have to wait & see what
they do in Free Agency & the draft.

Hmm... I just made a funny without even trying.... Coach MT's head (Coach
Empty Head).

Looks like several will be available this draft.

I would not be surprised to see this, either. I also think that Kemo might
replace Simmons and would welcome the change... as long as it doesn't
involve Simmons at C. What about Stapleton? I thought he was the next big
deal. Mahan at his natural guard with a good center would have, for the
first time I can remember for a very long time, a line that plays within
itself with nobody trying to 'adapt'. This is not a year for projects on the
OL... at least not if they want to protect their inevitable investment in
Ben.

Bye Bye Starks. the only way he remains with the steelers is as a low paid backup after the season is over . I cannot believe Colon is unable to beat this guy. Steelers have enough guards.
