Overall record in interconference games, AFC vs NFC: 32-32

However, the AFC playoff teams do bring a better total W-L record into
the second season than do the NFC teams.

I wonder how AFC playoff teams fared
against the NFC and vice-versa:

AFC Playoff Teams, Records versus NFC

New England ... 4-0
Indianapolis ..... 4-0
Pittsburgh ....... 3-1
San Diego ....... 2-2
Jacksonville ..... 3-1
Tennessee ...... 3-1

Overall ............ 19-5

NFC Playoff Teams, Records versus AFC

Dallas .............. 3-1
Green Bay ....... 4-0
Seattle ............ 2-2
Tampa Bay ...... 1-3
N.Y. Giants ...... 3-1
Washington ...... 2-2

Overall .............. 15-9

Oh well, not much in the way of positive
news for NFC playoff teams, there.

I just looked at the strength of schedule for the playoff teams
(available at the NFL's 2008 draft page):

Team SOS Opp W-L

Dallas 0.496 127-129
Green Bay 0.469 120-136
Seattle 0.414 106-150
Tampa Bay 0.469 120-136
New York 0.516 132-124
Washington 0.555 142-114

New England 0.469 120-136
Indianapolis 0.516 132-124
San Diego 0.500 128-128
Pittsburgh 0.453 116-140
Jacksonville 0.516 132-124
Tennessee 0.500 128-128

Four of the six AFC playoff teams had a SOS of .500 or better (three
of the four coming out of the AFC South), compared with only two for
the NFC (both from the NFC East).

NE's SOS was the second easiest of the AFC playoff field, while
Dallas' was the third hardest among the NFC playoff field (the top
three coming out the NFC East, by the way).

Not sure what conclusions (if any) can be drawn from these numbers.

Helpful to know as to how easy or
difficult a schedule actually turned
out to be for each playoff team. In
actuality, this makes the prospect
of a playoff game with Washington,
the hottest team entering the play-
offs, all the more scarier, what with
them having had the most difficult
schedule of all the playoff teams.

Put another way, to the extent that
easy schedules helped or difficult
schedules hampered some of the
playoff teams, here's that list re-
sorted from easiest to most diffi-
cult, with regular season records
included:

1. Seattle 10-6 ........... 0.414 106-150

2. Pittsburgh 10-6 ....... 0.453 116-140

3. New England 16-0 ... 0.469 120-136
3. Green Bay 13-3 ...... 0.469 120-136
3. Tampa Bay 9-7 ....... 0.469 120-136

6. Dallas 13-3 ............ 0.496 127-129

7. San Diego 11-5 ....... 0.500 128-128
7. Tennessee 10-6 ....... 0.500 128-128

9. Indianapolis 13-3 ..... 0.516 132-124
9. Jacksonville 11-5 ..... 0.516 132-124
9. New York 10-6 ........ 0.516 132-124

12. Washington 9-7 ....... 0.555 142-114

Teams that win alot reduce their SOS as a result.

New England plays in the worst division in football. Or at least close
to it.

NFC East is arguably the toughest division in the league.

As evidenced by 3 of it's 4 teams in the playoffs...

AFC South might take issue with the claim that the NFCE is the
toughest, as the AFCS also placed three teams in the playoffs. The
AFCS finished two games better than the NFCE and fared better against
the other conference (13-3) than did the NFCE (11-5).

AFC South has Tennessee, the worst QB'd team in the league.

Did the AFCS each have to play NE as the NFCE did?

Have to disagree with some of this argument.
Say what you will about the division but NE beat 6 of the teams that
are in the playoffs while Dallas only beat 3 teams and lost by the way
to two teams that NE beat. Don't know what this post means but until
Dallas beats either Indy or NE they can only claim third best and I
still think that the Jags, BOLTs and Steelers might be better as
well.

We will see
