Not surprisingly, the Giants have offered extended contracts for more
money to each man on their coaching staff. They are looking to re-sign
players Mitchell and Wilson before free agency starts. Also, there is
a rumor that the Giants may be looking to acquire Falcons DB DeAngelo
Hall.

http://snipurl.com/2069v

< for Tom Coughlin as "really not a sense of urgency," which is proof of
the inevitability of the situation. The deal will get done in the next
few days, and talks figure to heat up now that Mara, a member of the
NFL's competition committee, has completed his meetings at the NFL
Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Mara said there are no real problems with the negotiation, and, soon
enough, Coughlin will agree to what will most likely be a four-year
extension worth slightly more than $20 million. That would link
Coughlin to the GiantsNew York Giants until he turns 65 years old, a
fitting conclusion to a coaching career that reached the pinnacle with
this season's stunning Super Bowl title.

Most everyone associated with the Giants is reaping the benefits of
the Super Bowl triumph. Nearly every Giants assistant coach had one
year remaining on his contract, but all have been offered two or three-
year extensions for more money.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, whose contract was set to run
out at the end of March, was rewarded with a new deal. Already,
defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo cashed in with a three-year, $6
million deal after being wooed by the Redskins for their head-coaching
job.

Coughlin will speak today at the Combine and GM Jerry Reese will meet
with the media tomorrow. Reese has had little down time since the
playoff run ended, with the start of free agency arriving Feb. 29 and
the Giants unquestionably wanting to re-sign two key members of their
defense, safety Gibril WilsonGibril Wilson and linebacker Kawika
MitchellKawika Mitchell . Both are set to become unrestricted free
agents, and the Giants want to secure both before they hit the open
market.

That is more likely to happen with Mitchell, who made a strong
impression in his first year with the Giants. Reese considers Mitchell
a winning player whom he wants to keep with what likely will be a
three-year offer.

Wilson might be the best safety on the market, if he gets that far,
and the Giants know they will have to put together a significant
package to keep him. If Wilson becomes a free agent, he will receive
numerous offers and, although he wants to stay with the team that
drafted him in 2004, he may find more money elsewhere.

Retaining the services of their own players - the team has already re-
signed kicker Lawrence Tynes and punter Jeff Feagles and, for the
right price, wants to bring back running back Derrick Ward and
linebacker Reggie Torbor - is a top priority for the Giants.

For the second consecutive offseason, the Giants do not figure to be
huge players in free agency. However, according to a published report,
they are exploring the possibility of trading their first-round draft
pick (31st overall) to the Falcons in exchange for cornerback DeAngelo
Hall.

Hall, a two-time Pro Bowler, engaged in a wild sideline confrontation
this past season with former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino. Hall,
though, is considered one of the top young cover corners in the
league. >>

Note ... cover corner ...
I like the identity our defense has ... cover corners allow the pass
rush ...
create a system using the talents you have ... then improve on it
within the system ...

I'd like to give Hall a pass on his confrontation with Petrino. If
the Giants are comfortable that he'd be a good fit, they'd be getting
hom for the 31st pick. I'd make that deal in a Minnesota Minute.

I think this would be a good pick up. I think his blowups were linked to
the environment he was in. Once transplanted he'd be a whole different guy.

Is he worth a first round pick? 63 players will go by before we get to
choose someone.

I hadn't heard much about it ... but if TC and Spags are happy with
the guy ... so am I ...

At 31 we get someone who may be able to play above average in the
NFL ... Getting him we get someone known to play in the NFL at a high
level ... he's got a lot of years left ... so there's no age
barrier ...

Don't see this as a deal-breaker. Heck, there were times when Simms
and Parcells went at it pretty good.

I missed this part of the the thread when I posted about this on another
thread. I just don't think we can go better at 31 than Hall.

Sounds like he is worth the pick (and more). Great - I think he'd be a
great addition.

Heh heh. The idea of "chemistry" lasted only a few weeks, and now
it's based on pure talent. I have a friend that's die-hard Falcons
fan (yes, rare breed) and he's actually happy if Falcons can get any
1st round pick back from Hall because Hall has been nothing but a
prick and self-egotistic manic. I really don't follow the Falcons so
I have no idea if that's accurate, but hey, this is coming from a rare
die-hard Falcons fan.

But one major advantage: maybe people will get off Shockey's back...

Talent wise there's no question. But by making this deal I guess we
are all admitting that:

1) Webster's is nothing better than nickle-back.
2) So much for being good-player team-oriented chemistry first
mentality that some in this group had after winning the SB.

Again I admit I don't know too much about Hall, but what I heard from
my friend (rare Falcons fan) isn't good.

Your friend who likes the Falcons isn't the only one who has
questioned Hall. I understand that his college coaches at Virginia
Tech were said to think of Hall as a "me first" kind of player. I'd
rather have a team player.

I suppose it is possible that Reese thinks this guy will have a better
attitude if surrounded by team players. Not sure. Reese has been
excellent so far, so maybe he knows something we don't. On the
surface, I'm not crazy about this deal. However, Accorsi took a chance
on Kerry Collins and that worked out - Collins was a good team player.
Anyhow, it is just speculation so far. We'll see if the trade is for
real.

This was in the NY Post today:

"The likelihood of the Giants trading to get talented CB DeAngelo Hall
may not be high, but it sure appears certain Hall is finished in
Atlanta. He told reporters at the Combine he will not play again for
the Falcons and called it "a compliment" that the Giants have
expressed interest in him."

What he was there is no indication of what he'll be anywhere else. Good
example is Moss, and not as good is TO.

LOL, yeah, someone else to scrutinize.

Maybe that explains why the best the Falcons can do is to get the
Giants' 31st pick in return. Still, i think he's worth the asking
price..

It worked with Randy Moss. Even in that one defeat, the dude was not a
dick. I think that teams will for a short while anyway will forget the
likes of Terrell Owens with the Eagles and point to Moss as an example of
what can happen when you harness talent.
