An Ottawa team will resurface in the CFL next season, league sources
have assured me.
"It'll be announced officially during Grey Cup week in Toronto (late
this month)," one of the sources revealed. "The investing partners
have been thoroughly checked out and they're solid."
The club's president will be Jeff Hunt, who has a solid reputation as
owner of the OHL's Ottawa 67s. The sources said Hunt will be given a
percentage of the franchise and will be part of an ownership group
that will include property developers Roger Greenberg, John Ruddy and
William Shenkman.
And get this: The new franchise may have its old nickname, the Rough
Riders.

Very good news if it happens.

As a long time CFL fan, I like it. Having two teams with the
same name was one of those goofy things that helped to define the CFL.

Indeed, something that stemmed from the independent attitudes of the
old conferences. At one time the WIFU and the IRFU (aka: the Big 4),
prior to being conferences in the CFL, were for the most part their
own leagues. They both belonged to the CRU, but pretty much did as
they pleased.
Some fans may not know that the same playoff format wasn't adopted by
both conferences until the 1970's. Hell, eastern teams used to play a
14 game schedule with western teams playing 16.
With the WIFU and IRFU eventually forming the CFL, they never did
really settle the Rough Rider/Roughrider issue other than to leave it
alone.

Why do we need a team in Ottawa???? Why can't they just give up on that
city already. It's damaging the CFL to have to keep finding teams for

Did you feel the same way when the Stallions moved to Montreal?
Montreal lost 2 teams over the years also, and are now on their
3rd strike.

Great news. Provided ownership is stable (no Gliebermans or Chens
allowed, please!), and the product is decent, Ottawa can thrive again
in the CFL. That and Winnipeg needs to be back in the Western
conference. It just feels right. Here's to a two Rider league again! |

I kind of agree with you. The problem in Ottawa is not Ottawa but the
bad owners the team had over the years. They simply PO'ed the fans,
especially the Glieberdorks. With that said, I would prefer a Halifax
or Quebec City based team before another crack at Ottawa. But those
two cities lack the facilities for a CFL team.

IMHO, it's ownership. Wettenhall is a decent owner. I don't like his
lack of principle when it comes to salary caps and the firing of
commissioners, but for the most part he's been good for the Als.
