Roderick Green re-signs with 49ers

The 49ers re-signed pass-rush specialist Roderick Green today, the
club announced. Green, 25, was scheduled to become an unrestricted
free agent. He saw action in seven games for the 49ers last season.
Green recorded two sacks and just three tackles.

The 49ers waived Green during training camp, citing his lack of
versatility. He was signed to help the team's struggling pass rush on
Nov. 5, when the club placed tackle Jonas Jennings on injured reserve.

Guard Justin Smiley is expected to get some action on the free-agent
market. The Dolphins are ready to make a strong push for his services.
The Raiders, Rams and Bengals could also compete to sign him. Smiley
could command a signing bonus in the $7-8 million range. The 49ers
would like to bring him back . . . at the right price for them.

Word is the 49ers' quest to upgrade the defense has them focusing on
two players: DE Justin Smith (Bengals) and OLB Calvin Pace
(Cardinals). The 49ers are expected to make strong pushes for both
players, with the hope they can sign at least one of them.

There are expected to be six or seven teams in the bidding for Pace.
It'll take at least $14 million guaranteed to sign Pace, and the 49ers
are willing to pay at least that price, a league source said.

The free-agent signing period begins at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Here is
the list of 49ers free agents:

Unrestricted

G Larry Allen, DE Marques Douglas, WR Bryan Gilmore, T Kwame Harris,
RB Maurice Hicks, RS Michael Lewis, G Justin Smiley, NT Isaac Sopoaga,
DB Donald Strickland, QB Chris Weinke, DL Bryant Young (retired) and
CB B.J. Tucker (non-tendered RFA).

Restricted

TE Billy Bajema (tendered at low offer ($927,000) with ROFR and
7th-round pick as compensation),

When Mike Nolan informed Derek Smith of his released, Nolan asked if
there was anything he could do for him.

"Yeah," Smith said in today's San Diego Union-Tribune. "You can call
A.J. Smith and Norv Turner in San Diego, because that's where I want
to play."

UPDATE: I'll beat you to the punch. No, NO, Noooooooo, NOOOOOOOO --
the 49ers are NOT interested in this recently released wide receiver!
(Amazing that a picture exists in which he is in possession of the
football.)

I'd like to see Jonas Jennings waived ... his act is getting old for the
Niners .. just about as productive as Lloyd's 'distinguished career.
