I just bought & installed a Canon Pixma MP470 inkjet (nice machine
BTW). I can print from my harddrive fine, but when at a webmail site
via Firefox, I get an error message, "Printer not responding." If I
copy the text at the webmail site to notepad, I can print it,
NP.However, if I access the same site via IE, I can print it out
directly and quickly. I normally never use Internet Explorer & I don't
really want to start.

Am I doing something wrong? I have tried turning off all my security
apps ( which is extreme IMHO), but it does not help. Is there a work-
around for this?? The Canon site is no help at all, & the Firefox site
doesn't seem to address this issue either. I am using an Acer AST180
desktop running Windows MCE.

So as not to overlook the easy stuff, is the printer that Firefox is
trying to print to the right one, and not set to your previous printer
or a different port?

I've got a Pixma, and haven't had any issues printing to it at all.

try this:
if you can get this far before the error...
go to a web page in Ff and highlight a text string... then click the print
icon or File>Print
when the settings window pop's up (make sure Ff is not blocking the print
settings box) check the setting
(radio button) Print "Selection"

if this gets you no where...do whatever to bring up the error and then go to
the event viewer and see if it offers a clue...

BTW to fc

I get all the menus fine; it just starts out & aborts, & I get the
error message.

Are you using v.2.0.0.11?? It has been a bit buggy all along IMO, &
the Mozilla people are working on v.3.0 now so don't seem to be trying
to fix it.

If it prints from every other app fine then it is senseless to be
working on system settings or "upgrading the OS". That's akin to putting
a new motor in a car with a flat tire.

The problem is with FF. FF and Seamonkey both have their method of
connecting to the printing subsystem, special libraries that ship with
the browser.

I bet it's a USB printer also, right? They are in general a PITA.

Reinstall FF ONLY. If you get the same problem then remove FF again and
install an older version.

And remember what I said about "upgraditis"? If it works and no new
features are forthcoming - Don't fix it.

Its possible its set to something funny like "Microsoft Office Document
Image Writer", or a PDF writer?

I don't normally have problems with printing from Firefox, but I've
never had a non-HP printer...

HP Printers - Accept no substitutes, especially for an inkjet.

For those that don't know head clogging is a killer for inkjets (except
HP). If you don't print at least 1-2 pages a week they will surely clog
and then it's cheaper to buy another printer than fix the clog.

With HP's the head is part of the printer cartridge so replace the
cartridge and you replace the head.

I have a fairly new HP 5440 and a 13 year old 500C - Both work perfectly
with everything (OS and Software).

It's worse than that. Some IE only site won't even work with IE
properly. Apparently it's difficult to use their standards as I run into
many sites that are broken all the way 'round even for IE.
