High Definition Multimedia Interface

Accept nothing less to connect Sat/Cable box, DVD player etc...to your TV
(if it's a HD TV)

Shop on e-bay for HDMI cables...Google it and you will see that you can find
HDMI cables for $10 that are just as good as the ones that cost 5 times that
much.

The best deal I have seen on flat panel HD TVs is the 32" VIZIO for
$600.00...I have set up numerous Sony sets (up to 6o") and several smaller
TVs both plasma and LCD and *for the money* the VIZIO is hard to beat

Sony crushes Vizio when viewed side by side with comparable signals and
settings. But the fact is, you don't view side by side so Vizio sets
are a dramatic improvement over any CRT or older rear projection set.

I have read many good things about Vizio. I suspect in many srores in
the side-by-side comparison, a Sony is set up/calibrated/adjusted to
show it at its best, but a brand like Vizio or Olevia, w/ less profit
margin, isn't. But I am waiting a year till the Vizio's drop a bit
more, & hopefully have 120Hz refresh.Projections I just saw are that
by the end of 2008, a 37" LCD will not cost much more than a 32" now.

I've had a 46" Sony for while (Bravia) and I can tell you for a fact the
VIZIO 32" (cost three times less) has nearly the same picture quality...do
they even have a set of benchmarks for handicapping?

gb: Thanks for that "suspect". I have been kinda looking for HD for some

inferior reception. Also I am suspect about some salesmen -- lt seems as

Yeah they have fallen at least 40% in the last year. Eventually the flat
panels will cost the same or less than CRT's as they are simpler to
make.

That also fits into my plan of wait and see = Lower prices. I can't just
jump into this I have...

2 TV's (32 and a 27)
2 analog Recording devices (VCR's)
1 Tuner capture card in my PC.
1 Home DVD Player (doesn't use a signal but compatibility is an issue)

With Dish TV (I've about had it with Brighthouse) you get two "boxes".
My BIL said in passing (I think) one converter box could handle both a
recording device and a TV. If that is the case I have to replace all of
the above.

I may also be able to use my LAN somehow - I dunno. I haven't seen the
equipment.

I think I'll start the experiment with a HD Tuner card for my PC.

I've got an Olevia that 27" LCD that I purchased a while back. Decent
picture quality, especially at the price. My biggest peeve about the
thing is that it's slow to respond to the remote, and I haven't yet
found a universal remote that works well (if at all) with their sets.

I've found it to be the reverse at Sam's, the picture on the Vizio is
always set to "vivid" and they are usually placed on an end cap by
themselves, as are the Olevia.

If by "salesman" you mean the teenager at Best buy or Circuit City, they

In both the computer mags & in "Consumer Reports" I have read nothing
but positive feedback about Verizon fiberoptical; people who have it,
love it, across the board. Always rated #1.

I have had it for a year and a half, the picture is far superior to
BarfHouse and they have employees rather than subs doing the installs.
the FIOS ISP has not been down once; Road Runner was out 2-3 times per
week for 2-3 hours at a shot.

FIOS tv has fewer HD channels than Brighthouse and do not currently
offer the Center Ice package for hockey or the MLB or NBA packages.

I'm a satisfied customer. Hard to imagine me saying that about a
phone company before FIOS...

I just did. Question. If HDMI connects converter box directly to TV for
*both* audio and video I hope they have audio out so I can connect to my
A/V receiver.

Oh I see this unit does...

http://www.vizio.com/products/detail.aspx?pid=18

Retailing now for $600. Not bad and they will get cheaper. Looking at
the outputs and inputs it appears to have all I need.

Question - If...

Supported TV Formats
1080i, 720p, 720i, 480p, 480i

And...

Integrated television tuner - enjoy high definition and regular
television programs with or without paid high definition service.

Why couldn't you just plug this into a regular analog signal source and
start using it? That would be good for me because I have to and prefer
to do this one step at a time. Also as of now I pretty much have decided
to go to a SAT setup. But I really really prefer to do this one step at
a time.

BTW, my old 32" RCA CRT weighs 140 pounds. It would be nice moving 40
pounds rather that that behemoth.

Yeah but they still have some dumb asses in billing and setup.

For example - Requires XP or higher.

....My thoughts, XP what is that? All I have is Linux, a Unix derivative
that lierally runs the internet.

After hours of arguing with them finally they send out a guy with a
laptop to solve any activation issues.

Think about how stupid "Requires..." is for a minute.

Billing - It's split into the ISP division and the TV departments. Four
months in a row they applied my buddy's payment to the ISP division
only. One day he came on and the TV signal was gone but the ISP was up.
He's spent probably 20 hours over this and it still isn't straight.

I prefer to go with ADSL and SAT. BTW, Comcast is rolling out a new
cable protocol that will smoke FIOS, 160MBs connections...

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/01/08/ces.comcast.ap/

Quoted...

"Roberts is expected to demonstrate a technology that delivers up to 160
megabits of data per second: It will allow him to download a
high-definition copy of "Batman Begins" in four minutes. The technology,
DOCSIS 3.0, will start rolling out this year.

"If it's as successful as we hope, in 2009 and beyond we will have it
available in millions of homes," he said.

Robert hopes the speed-up will boost growth of Comcast's broadband
service, which has been slowing.

Cable systems largely enable download speeds up to 10 Mbps -- compared
with up to 50 Mbps from Verizon's fiber-optic service FiOS."

FWIW...
A couple of points about Satellite Television...not sure about DISH Network
but with Direct TV you need at least a "5LNB" dish (a little larger than the
little 18" jobs) to get HD signal...

Another item to realize with Satellite receivers... if your TV has PIP
(picture in picture) you will need two receiver boxes connected to the set
(there is a monthly fee for each box, I thinks it's $6)...you can set a
broadcast antenna or another device like a DVD player as the signal source
for the second "picture" but you can't get two different channels from the
same (receiver) box at the same time...!

the 32" Vizio mentioned does have PIP...FWIW
