Pack $20 million under cap; looking at tight ends; youth football camps

The Green Bay Packers are still about $20 million under their expected
salary cap after naming Corey Williams their franchise player and cutting
Bubba Franks.
Without Williams the Packers would be thin in the middle of the defensive
line.
Ryan Pickett played well there, but Johnny Jolly is coming back from
shoulder surgery and Justin Harrell only had a fair rookie season.
Tight ends
After releasing veteran tight end Bubba Franks, the Packers are auditioning
tight ends at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Texas junior Jermichael Finley says the Packers have been paying the most
attention to him and he thinks he'd fit in well in Green Bay.
Tight end prospects will do weight-lifting at the Combine today (Friday).
Saturday, they'll perform agility drills and run the 40-yard dash.
Franks was the Packers' first round draft choice eight years ago, but he was
cut on Wednesday after losing his starting job to Donald Lee in 2007.
Lee had a breakout year, catching 48 passes for 575 yards and six touchdowns
and the Packers are looking for a younger tight end as a complement.
Meanwhile, Franks' agent says several teams are interested in picking him
up, but he wouldn't say who they were.
Youth Football Camps
The Packers announced Thursday for the team's annual Youth Football Camps
that will take place this summer at nine locations in Wisconsin.
The program, designed for boys and girls ages 6 to 14, features non-contact
skill instruction over the course of five days during full-day camps, from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m.
The camps, now in their seventh consecutive year, are led by professional
educators, college and high school coaches, and Green Bay Packers alumni
players such as John Anderson, Johnnie Gray, Dexter McNabb, Bill Schroeder
and Paul Rudzinski.
The camps have a 10:1 student-to-instructor ratio.
Instructors will teach kids how to throw, catch, defend, form block, form
tackle, compete, run and explode out of a stance with proper technique and
improved skills. With a station-based training format, every football
position is taught in detail.
