Your colleague at Case is mentioned in Tuesday Morning Quarterback and
you aren't?

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=easterbrook/080212

"Lawrence Krauss of Case Western Reserve University, one of the hot
names in physics, is first author of this fascinating paper. The paper
predicts that 3 trillion years from now, the universe will have
expanded to such vastness, and its edges accelerated to such speeds,
that an observer in our galaxy, the Milky Way, will not be able to see
any other galaxy."

He's a "hot name?"

It's time to step up or polish up the ole vitae.

If we only saw the stars in our OWN galaxy, the sky would still be
darned full of stars though, right?

*now*, yes.

in 3 trillion years, all the stars existing in the galaxy today will
have died out, and by that time there will likely be no new stars
being formed, and so the night sky will be very dark indeed. of course
our own sun will have died out well before *that*.

such is life.

I find it interesting that when our sun dies, it will EXPAND past
Earth's orbit, and Earth will burn out long before it ever gets cold.

Isn't there a constant regeneration of stars due to supernovas and the
like?

Also, at some time wouldn't there have to be a Big Contraction back
from the Big Bang, or is the momentum of the BB enough to overcome
gravity indefinately?

They aren't entirely sure how much the sun will expand, but this
is a possibly. The Earth gets cooked either way.

That can extend the star-forming lifecycle of the galaxy somewhat, but
the timescales we're talking about here (trillions of years) are much
much beyond that.

> Also, at some time wouldn't there have to be a Big Contraction back

nope.

> or is the momentum of the BB enough to overcome

if you believe the "dark energy" stuff, the expansion of the universe
is accelerating with time, so no recollapse.

and if you don't believe that, then there's still not enough mass in
the universe to overcome the current expansion rate.

so either way, no recollapse of the universe.

See, this is all very depressing. It means that eventually all there
is going to be is a bunch of cold, dark atoms contantly moving away
from one another. Philosophically disturbing.
