Again tomorrow, the Tigers will raise a Championship Flag above their
stadium. How many more decades will it take the Lions to do the same?

Well, Tigers and Pistons anyway.

You never know. I wouldn't be surprised if they won the Super Bowl, but
I also wouldn't be surprised if they ended up with the #2 pick next year.
The only thing the Lions could do that would really surprise me is if
they were tied for the #1 overall pick next year, and actually lost the
game.

Here is a little fun trivia for all:
Detroit's own "Brown Bomber," Joe Louis, captured national attention on his
way to the heavyweight championship of the world, and was bolstered when the
Detroit Red Wings won the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup and the
Detroit Lions won the National Football League championship in 1935. The
Detroit Tigers won the American League pennant in 1934 and again in 1935.
And it was the Tigers who made the "City of Champions" title stick by
winning the World Series in 1935, defeating the Chicago Cubs.
I don't think there are any other Cities that have fielded 4 Pro Champions
in the same year.

There's a huge difference between making the playoffs and winning the
whole thing.

Nothing.
The Saints were one step away from the Super Bowl, and they picked #2
overall last season. It's all about making the right personnel moves.
You can go from a joke to the best team in football literally overnight.
Wouldn't surprise me if they did that.
It would surprise me if the Lions did the smart, logical thing and lost
a game they should lose to get the better pick.

The sky is blue.
What's your point?
Just because you have to make the playoffs to win a Super Bowl doesn't
mean that if you make the playoffs, you are going to win the Super Bowl.

No. Not really.

Me being a Colorado fan is entirely irrelevant.

Not really.
You don't know anything at all about hockey, so I am going to go easy on
you here. The national media isn't talking about the Wings winning the
Cup, and for good reason. The Wings are a shallow team with a HUGE
question mark between the pipes. The Wings are also a team that has had
a really tough time making it out of the first or second round in recent
years. The Wings are a much weaker team this year than they were last
year, and the rest of the Western Conference has gotten a lot stronger.
The Wings are where they are in the standings because they play in the
weakest division in hockey. They are not a heavy favorite to do anything
in the playoffs.
This isn't 1998, bud.

Not really.

Y'know,...I'm beginning to believe Tommy is actually a Vikings fan.
Who else would need to beg the Lions to lose more than they have?

Not really. It shows how badly the team has been run, how poor the
coaching has been, how poorly the Lions have chosen coaches, how poorly
the team has played, and how poorly the team has chosen who to sign in
free agency.
Drafting has only been a part of it, and none of the teams that have
picked higher and gone on to make the playoffs have done so just because
of their draft picks.

You forgot to blame the concessionaires and parking lot attendants.

So you want it both ways?
The top pick *is* important enough to tank a season ending game
for the Lions,...but it's only a tiny piece of the puzzle of why they've
been losing so consistently.
Got it.
"We NEED to draft higher, but it won't make much difference."

Yes,...completely.
They didn't hear about the NFL no longer being a "keeper league".
Peyton is available now, right?

"2nd to 9th"????
No, the assertion (by you) was that they should lose a game to go
from 2nd to 1st.
Do you recognize yourself in the mirror in the morning,
or is your memory so bad that you have to wear a nametag?

I have a problem with stealing. I don't have a problem with losing on
purpose to get better draft picks.
There is no parallel between the two. It's smart business. Nothing more
or less.

Might be their only hope.
I had fantasies of the Lions moving to Cleveland after Modell
picked up his marbles and slunk away.
Detroit would have had a much better shot at winning a SB with
an expansion franchise.
