I've wanted to see this change for some time. According to an article I saw
on the internet today, Goodell is looking at changing the system by which
teams are seeded in the playoffs in an effort to make more end of season
games meaningful. From the article:

For the first time in years, the league is considering revamping seedings in
the playoffs to assure that more late-season games are meaningful. That
could lead to a wild-card team actually hosting a first-round game if it has
a better record than the division winner it is meeting.
Goodell admitted concern that some teams had virtually nothing to play for
toward the end of the schedule.

"The incentive should be for every team to win as many games as possible,"
he said. "We are going to look into the potential of seeding our teams
differently after they qualify for the playoffs, so that you could
potentially make more of the regular-season games have significance for the
postseason."

Now they also need to change that if a team has a better record than a team
that is leading there specific conference, The conference team is bumped for
the better record.

Like I think it was 5 years ago. Browns went to the playoffs, miami was #7
but had a better record than the browns.

I hope they do it.

While they are at it they may want to try to revamp the NFL so that not only
do teams have something to play for but they are able to play, period.
More than half of NFL teams, and that is a conservative evaluation, are
simply non-competitive. In fact, they can barely be called a team. No one,
even most of their partisan fans, wants to watch these teams play each other
let alone play a team with which they can not compete.
In part the problem is that there is no financial penalty for failure in the
NFL. I wish I were in that business.
Yes, New England and Brady are both great, but they are playing in an NFL
where the general quality of play has steadily deteriorated.
If you analyze where Brady's 50 TD passes come from it is instantly obvious
that there is wee bit of padding in his jock strap.

Here's an idea: use the overall season records to determine who makes the
playoffs, and the last half of the season records to determine the seeds.
That would make it harder for teams to just coast the last two or three
games.
