It sounds like he'll probably be ready for preseason, but why did they wait
this long to make the decision?

On the positive side, the doc who's doing the cutting has a good track
record with foot surgeries on pro athletes & they seem to come back as good
as new.

I'd wait as long as possible too, as long as there was some hope of
getting better without surgery. It's been only about a month, it's
not like he pulled a Shaq and waited until training camp started to
get cut on.

That is good news, not having a healthy Gates definitely hurt the
Chargers, especially in the red zone against the Pats. Hopefully
everything works out OK and he'll be ready to go next season.
