Randy Moss Headed to Packers? That Ship has Sailed.
Remember Brett Favre's not-so-subtle lobbying to bring a tattered Randy Moss
to Green Bay last year? Favre had no idea the type of offense that would
eventually develop around him, and he badly wanted Moss.
After being humiliated and ignored by Oakland's offense, Moss wanted Green
Bay, too. It could have been an easy deal for the Packers to make. He quite
simply wanted the chance to play with Brett Favre.
When the Packer's front office made it clear that this sensible deal would
not happen, things got real ugly. Favre supposedly even demanded a trade,
although that appears to be either total rumor or a 24 hour meltdown by the
quarterback. It is now clear he will retire in Green Bay.
The problem is that Green Bay's higher-ups apparently prefaced talks with
Moss by constantly reminding him that he would be on thin ice from the start
and have to prove himself, his work ethic, and his commitment like a rookie
out of the combine. Moss was also reminded that Donald Driver is the number
one of the Packer's receiving core. This was perhaps not the best way to
begin brokering a deal with a phenomenal receiver who needs a little
ego-pumping like Moss does.
It is clear that the deal was never actually going to happen. Packer's
management did not want Moss' baggage and unpredictable attitude infesting
Lambeau. It is a community owned team with a reputation for fostering
amicable players over reigning in mega-talented, mega-egos. Many Packer
fans, however, coming off an 8-8 season without a playoff bid, were willing
to take that risk and pair two of the game's greats on the same Tundra.
What could have been. We will never know.
What transpired in the 2007 season was magical for both Moss and Favre. The
gods of the NFL led Randy to a historic season and developed a magical
receiving platoon for Green Bay. One more touchdown for the Pack in the NFC
Championship game, and Randy and Brett would have shared the Super Bowl
field in one of the most ironic storylines of the season.
But, it is a different world now for these two teams and these two players.
Most likely the Patriots will not need to place the franchise tag on Moss to
keep him in New England and the Packers no longer need his services. Moss is
no longer a need in Green Bay as a result of the surprising emergence of a
huge playmaker named Greg Jennings.
If Brett Favre returns, there aren't many defenses that should be able to
stop the supernatural catches of a now freed up Donald Driver. Greg Jennings
can explode across the field and around fleet footed safeties and corners to
turn mediocre plays into touchdowns. With a full offseason in Green Bay to
get his bearings and confidence, Koren Robinson could once again be a pro
bowler. (Also, let's not forget about Ruvell Martin and tight end Donald
Lee's contributions to this deep offense).
It would have been spectacularly interesting to see the Favre/Moss
experiment take life in 2007. But it is now nothing more than a footnote in
the frenzied weeks leading up to another frenzied NFL season.
It seems the deal that never happened worked out well for all parties
involved.
