Excerpts:
Roger Staubach has won two Super Bowls.
He hopes his third comes Tuesday.
Staubach, who quarterbacked the Cowboys
to victories in Super Bowls VI and XII, is the
chairman of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV
Bid Committee. He will make a 15-minute pre-
sentation to NFL owners in Nashville on Tues-
day in hopes of landing the 2011 Super Bowl
for the Cowboys’ new $1 billion stadium in Arl-
ington.
“I’m 2-2 in Super Bowls [as a starter]; I want
to be 3-2,” Staubach said in a conference call
Wednesday. “... I’ve had a Super Bowl history
that I’m going to try to bring out in my remarks.
It’s been a very instrumental part of my life as
far as what it’s meant to me.
“This is my chance to be the host and to make
sure this is the best Super Bowl they’ve ever
had.”
Arlington or Indianapolis is expected to win
the 2011 Super Bowl over Glendale, Ariz.,
because Arizona hosts this season’s Super
Bowl in the Cardinals’ new stadium. Indian-
apolis opens its new retractable-roof stadi-
um in 2008, a year before the Cowboys’
new stadium debuts.
The 32 owners will vote on the 2011 Super
Bowl after hearing the three presentations.
....
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will have five
minutes to convince fellow owners to give
North Texas its first Super Bowl. He has
said that, with a potential stadium seating
capacity of 100,000, North Texas’ Super
Bowl bid will “blow your socks off finan-
cially.”
“We’re really going to have the best bid,”
Staubach said. “I really believe that based
on the resources we have to be able to
deliver the bid.”
....
Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue im-
plied to Arlington voters that North Texas
would receive the 2011 game if they ap-
proved a stadium referendum, which they
did in 2004. Jones is expected to remind
fellow owners of that Tuesday.
“The most important thing is, candidly, this
is going to be a heck of a place to have a
Super Bowl,” Jones said. “We have all of
the kinds of numbers that they need – hotel-
wise, transportation-wise; we’re in the center
of the country. There will not be a better sta-
dium ever to have a Super Bowl in than this
stadium.”
