Champ impressed with Rivers
Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey still thinks Philip Rivers talks too
much.
But the elder statesman of NFL cornerbacks watched the AFC Championship game
last month and came away with a new respect for the Chargers quarterback
after Rivers played against the Patriots with a torn ACL.
"I couldn't believe he went out there," Bailey said today after the AFC Pro
Bowl squad practiced. "I'm very impressed. He's very tough."
Bailey in December criticized Rivers as being classless and talking too much
after the teams played a Monday night game on Christmas Eve.
I wanted to talk to Bailey about Rivers, because Bailey is widely regarded
as one of the classiest guys in the league, always accomodating and a
thoughtful speaker. And anyone who has read my blog or mailbag for a time
knows I am a staunch defender of Rivers as one of the most genuine people I
have ever known.
Bailey essentially reiterated his stance about Rivers' mouth yesterday,
saying none of the top QBs he has played against have initiated the trash
talk the way Rivers does. And he said is partly bothered by the talk because
Rivers is not a great quarterback - "getting better, but not great yet."
But he was clearly impressed by Rivers' toughness in the playoffs.
Said Bailey: "I'll give him credit where credit is due."

Pro Bowl in San Diego?
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke to reporters during the AFC's Pro Bowl
practice this morning.
Most of the questions were about the Patriots filming practices. But he also
said that after the NFL's current commitment to stage the Pro Bowl in Hawaii
runs out next year, the league could choose to hold the all-star game on a
rotating basis on the mainland.
Goodell did not hint at any possible locales, but word is that San Diego is
a possible site.
