Better living through chemistry?

This is probably one of many reasons that autistic people who post in the
autism support newsgroup "do NOT" want to be "cured." |

Gene Wolfe's autochthons.

It's amazing the number of times something in this group sends me
googling just so I can understand a reference.
Not so amazing is the number of times I still don't understand it
after googling.

I don't even google it anymore.
Mostly because (knowing the audience) I'm betting Gene Wolfe is an
author and autochthons is something from some futuristic science
fiction genre. Although that would be interesting to me, it doesn't
necessarily interest me and most likely won't ever make it into the
stream of words before my eyes.
So, I don't even waste my time googling it.
Obviously, that makes me superior.

You're missing out. Strictly speaking, I guess it would be fantasy rather
than science fiction, but that's not doing Wolfe any justice - it's actually
real live literature dressed up funny.
And to bring it into rsfc context, I should point out that Wolfe was a Aggie.
The autochthons he writes about almost in passing are people who become tired of
the responsibility of being people so they have their humanity surgically excised
and live like animals in the mountains.
His books have dorky titles, and dorkier cover art, but they are real, serious
books with a lot to offer the literate.

I'm all for scientific discovery and using medicine to help
people...but this sounds awfully dangerous to me.
