I saw that they want to keep both QBs, Lewis and Romeo. Kinda figured they
would. |

There were a couple of interesting quotes. The first had to do with
Anderson, where Savage said they want to stay strong at that position -
for at least one more year. Sounds like they want to see how things
unfold next season before possibly trading one of the QB's a year from
now.
Then regarding Crennel, he stated Romeo has respect in the locker room,
and as long as that continues, and he wins he'll be in good standing
with the Browns organization. So if the team goes 6-10 in '08, I guess
he wont be in good standing. In that case, a contract extension/bonus
now would really just be a bonus for having a good year in '07, then
they'd probably buy out his contract after next season or the next. The
good news is coaching contracts don't count against the cap so it's just
a case of Lerner throwing money around, which is merely pocket change
for him.
I for one, hope they re-sign Jamal Lewis. According to that article it
seems like he wants to stay in Cleveland. Too bad Rashard Mendenhall
wont drop to the Browns pick in the 2nd round. He appears to be a
possible top 10 pick, but he'd have looked good teaming up with Lewis in
the Browns backfield. He's not AP but is pretty darn good in his own
right. |

I got that as well and it makes perfect sense. BQ hasn't proven a thing
between the hash marks. MUch like Brian Billick RAC, Chud are benefitting
from the long term ill's of the Browns and (finally) a great draft (ala the
ravens 1998 Ogden & Lewis) that turned it around in a single season (though
there have been good, potentially great, players present all along).

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti perhaps set the bar for such asinine HC
contracts after Billick was extended $5 mil over 4 years then coached one
single season into it. While it was expected that Billick would recieve the
remaining 15 million, rumor now has it that Billick's contract may have had
only one season gauranteed. If that is the case then Bisciotti is the genius
....not Billick, ...and my season ticket prices shouldn't go up to
offset/absorb the loss.

FYI: Billicks contract was $20 million over 4 years at 5 per.
I'm sure most knew but some may not to realize what I attempted to before my
shoe laces got in the way.

Lets just keep trading next years picks and sooner or later when the world
comes to an end, we'll be one step ahead. Free pick!

Please keep in mind, that the two QBs trade value will never be higher than
it is right now. i.e., Who ever pans out, the Browns will definitely want
to keep for a long time. The other one's trade value will go down.
If they're ultimately going to trade one of these guys, now's the time to do
it.
And . . . I keep remembering, that Kellen Winslow was extremely wide open on
that last play in Cincy . . .

That's not necessarily true.
Either QB's value can go up or down over the next season or two or even
deep into the future depending on circumstances not known at the moment. |

They should have gotten rid of him a year or two ago imo, Drew. And as
much as I like Ozzie, he should probably be replaced as well. Isn't he
usually in charge of the Ravens draft? (I don't know, but I'm thinking
that's the set-up there.) If that's the case maybe they need someone new
to help right the ship. Their QB situation isn't the best to say the
least, for one thing.
Speaking of high dollar coaches, isn't Cowher looking for 8 mil/year?
And pretty much total control? If he ever gets it I hope it's NOT with
the Browns. |

Agreed! Even though I doubt they'll be able to trade back into the 1st
round this year, it would be great if they can find a way without giving
up next year's 1st rounder. There's a good chance they'll be picking in
the top 12 picks in '09. I just have a feeling next season will be
disappointing.
However, I do like the idea of trading a pick this year to move up a
round or two in next year's draft. For instance, we received a 6th
rounder (for Frye I believe), so what I'd like to see happen is trade it
for a 5th in '09. Then in '09 trade it for a 4th in '10. Just keep
progressing with the trades as long as possible, perhaps turning it into
an eventual 1st in '13 (or sooner if they can trade up two rounds in a
trade). It's a pick we got from another team anyways, so why not try
something innovative like that and see how far we can get with it?
Considering there is a low probability a 6th round selection will turn
into a superstar, I'd like to see this tried. Along the way they'd
probably have to throw in an extra low round pick or two (or a player),
but it would be worth it in the long run.
Of course, with coaches having short tenures in the NFL, they would not
want to give up a draft pick this year for one in a future year. Not to
mention the Browns do not have a 5th rounder this year, so I could see
Savage trying to package our two 6th rounders for a 5th, or to move up
earlier in the 4th. He's not the type to sit tight with his draft
position it seems, based on last year. |

I don't claim football knowledge. I do understand business. Don't read

I called for his head after the 5th game of the 2000 season. You are being
far more kind than I.

You may be right but Ozzie has so many connections through the ranks of
collegiate coaches etc, that I think you loose more than you gain there.

That is our history for sure but many teams fall into that predicament.
Since returning to the league then Browns have yet to aquire a franchise QB
themselves. Until Quinn takes the field and proves himself I'm not
annointing him their first. Dennis Green can say that far more elegantly
....well, enthusiastically anyway ; )

If he were more of a task master and less players coach I wouldn't dismiss
him as a candidate in B'more. But he is a players coach and we had that here
in Billick as the patients ran the mental ward.
I actually want the Colts - Jim Caldwell. Coming from one of the most
competitive and physically tough divisions in the AFC he is my choice for
HC. I can't stand that the Ravens are entertaining NFC coaches as the top
candidates for HC here after we stepped into that hole with Billick. NFC
coaches have no clue as to how to compete with the higher caliber of teams
to be played within the AFC as it is.
