This was hashed about in another thread, so I thought I'd lay out the
facts in a new post so it doesn't get lost in the mess.
In 2004, Springs signed a Six year contract worth 21M in base salary.
He also received a 10.25M signing bonus at that time.
In addition, in 2006, he had 3.1M of his base salary converted to a
bonus.
There has been no other contract activity. With no changes, he'll
count about 7.7M against the cap in 2008 (I've rounded to 1 decimal
place and put the extra on 2009).
Year 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Totals
Bonus Paid 10.25 3.1
Bonus vs CAP 1.7 1.7 1.7 2.7 2.7 2.75 13.25
Base Salary 0.75 1.5 2 2.5 5 6 17.95
Total Cap 2.45 3.2 3.7 5.2 7.7 8.75
For the 2008 season, the team can convert about 4.25M of his base
salary into a bonus, which would reduce his 2008 cap hit by about
2.25M (and increase his 2009 cap hit by about the same amount). You
can't convert the whole 5M, you have to maintain minumum base salary
levels.
This would guarantee that 2008 would be his last year with the 'skins
as his 2009 cap hit would be over 10M....unless they also add years to
his contract (which spreads out the bonus even further).
If they cut or trade Shawn, it will reduce the 2008 cap number by his
5M base salary. It will also INCREASE the 2008 cap number by the
amount left of his 2009 bonus, for a net gain of only 2.25.
So, they can either re-structure him to save 2.25M in cap space, and
keep him on the team...or....they can cut him to save the same amount.

Thanks Airyx. As far as I'm concerned, the book on this is closed. Val may
feel differently.
Now, about Ocho Cinco's contract ....

That clears things up. I have a bad feeling, he may end up at Dallas. |

Val corners himself in error early on, yet still manages to string you
along with his patented Yoda Haikus for another 80 posts....and "I" have
to keep up?
Funny stuff there, Champ.
And still...Springs may or may not go this season.
The Legend of Val is alive and well, I see, too. |

Thanks for detail. The Skins need to keep Springs for 2008. Very good
cornerbacks are hard to find. And with Rogers's MCL/ACL injury, we need
some stability at the CB position.

Only if he refuses to re-structure, which could happen because that
would essentially be a one year deal. The 'skins simply can't afford
to keep him on the roster at his 2008 and 2009 cap ratios and still
build the team.
However, guys at this stage of a career are looking for a longer term
contact. He can refuse the 'skins, wait to get cut, and go find a deal
elsewhere, but that would likely also be a one year deal. No team is
going to be willing to pick-up the back end of this contract in a
trade.
So, to me, the 'skins are likely to extend his contract by two or
three more years (as they did with Jansen last year), to spread his
guaranteed dollars out further, and thus make his cap hit manageable
through 2009. |

Agreed. It would be nice if he agreed to restructure or accept an
extension, but my gut tells me he's going to force them to honor the deal
as-is. They can't eat an $8M cap hit, so they'll have to cut someone else,
unless Jansen can turn himself into a shutdown corner between now and
September.

I responded twice, which is one more than it deserved. Check with Carr on
repeat offenderism.
> Funny stuff there, Champ.
I try.
> And still...Springs may or may not go this season.
And I may or may not be given $1M tomorrow by my drunken Uncle Johnny. But
he can't play corner. Springs likely stays because it's the move that makes
the most sense. Rogers won't be back until mid- to late next year (if at
all), and they got no one else after Smoot. Logic says you have to keep
him. But logic also said that you don't sign a free agent safety who's only
good in the box when you're running a Williams system that relies on speed
and cover ability. But they signed Archuletta anyway, so logic ain't a
requirement in Washington.
>
> The Legend of Val is alive and well, I see, too.
I must admit I like telling him to get back on his meds. His looney
behavior livens things up a bit. But the rants with no backup facts can be
annoying after the 80th post. And most of that seems to be Carr pouring gas
on the open flame. |
