Remember a post a while back about how bad Simms looked? I wasn't
kidding at the time as it even shocked me.
Well things are not getting better it seems....
Simms Still Struggling

Bucs quarterback Chris Simms is currently participating on scout team
11-on-11 drills and threw three interceptions in somewhere between 20 and
25 plays. The majority of other passes were incomplete.
If Simms fans are looking for something encouraging, he did finally throw
spiral passes. Most of his previous throws have wobbled, or fell short of
the intended target. His passes are looking better, but he still does not
seem ready to play in an NFL game.

No, Ron, I was at camp Tuesday for the afternoon session, and things
aren't any better at all for Simms. I saw the 3 INT's, and balls thrown
behind receivers and into the ground. He seemed anxious to throw to anybody
who'd catch one while he was waiting his turn in the rotation. I've always
been a big Simms supporter, and you can't argue with his effort, but if he
doesn't improve drastically and in a hurry, I don't see the sense in
retaining him on the team. On a happier note, my wife got an autograph from
Gradkowski and he didn't fumble the pen! |

Simms needs to use his body to generate power to through deep and
accurate. Simms does not have an exceptionally strong arm to where he
can heave it down field accurately just with his arm. His upper body h
as not healed enough and the upper body muscle strength has yet to
return. He maybe medically cleared to resume play but he is not
physically able to compete on a high level. This is evident with the
sore elbow he has experienced in camp so far. He has altered his
throwing motion somewhat and is put more stress on his arm. It has
also meant he is less accurate.
Most likely he will go back onto IR this season and rehab and gain
more upper body strength. Then return to compete or be traded or
released.

Biggest problem with him going on IR this season is, he's not injured
afaik. The doctors have cleared him to play, so unless he gets a
hamstring injury, or something, I don't think they can place him on IR. |

Gruden got peeved when asked about that yesterday or this morning. He
said he is not "injured" otherwise he would not be on the field
practicing. He also said he is tired of talking about it and he will
play if and when he improves enough.
I would say that makes him an unlikely candidate for IR.
Then some brain dead poster asked in response when Dungy's contract is
up. Good grief. Talk about separation from reality. It doesn't matter oh
one with brain o' goo. He ain't coming back. It's ancient history. That
ship has sailed. Gone. Over. What "big" words do these people not
understand.
And we all know it was Gruden who laid that hit on Simms that ruptured
his spleen. Geez...
Frankly I don't know what to do and many others are far more extreme
than I on the Simms issue. I hate to see him cut at this point but the
hard reality is one QB spot is too valuable to waste on a player that
just can't play. I think the best this can turn out is they somehow find
a way to carry 4 QB's. But then again I'm not the GM.

It's 'possible' that Gruden will put him in the last preseason game so
they can say he's 'injured' and go on IR. Simms shouldn't have a problem
going along with that scenario since it will give him a paycheck and he
will be able to work with the coaches to be ready for next year...just
in case the Bucs decide that Gradkowski isn't the future. |

if that is the case then he will probably be cut and mayber resigned
to the practice squad if they so choose.
Right now the return of Simms to the Bucs 53 man roster is not a done
deal.

Shucks - those medical people on the Bucs staff can find some medical
term that would make Sims eligible to be put on IR
How about: Recurrence of surgery stress points; or Post rehabilitation
injury; good grief who is going to question them.
Hey - they may even ask one of the gals that does on-the-field
interviews while the game is in progress. She could easily declare that
he has a "headache"
Or maybe PMS -- Pre-Season Manipulatory Soreness |

Yep gone are the days when you could hide a player on IR. Bruce's
father was good at that. Back in the old days you could put a player
on IR for 6 weeks and bring him back to the active roster. During the
60's and 70's too many teams were hiding players on the IR. I guess
the practice squad could be used the same way.
There is still one way that he could go onto IR. That is if his elbow
does not heal properly. Then they can stash him on IR due to elbow
inflamation and not due to the surgery. Different ailment.
