James Lofton has agreed to terms to join the Raiders offensive staff,
news that came as a surprise to coach Lane Kiffin.

According to a team source, Kiffin was told by a third party not
affiliated with the club that Lofton was coming aboard.

Kiffin met with Lofton on Monday after his return from Mobile, Ala., in
an interview senior executive John Herrera described as "excellent."

Herrera said Wednesday there were no announcements regarding team
business. The Raiders seldom make announcements until contracts are
actually signed.

According to the team source who preferred to remain anonymous, Kiffin
neither extended a job offer to Lofton nor was he ever told by owner Al
Davis or anyone in the front office that an offer had been made.

Except for Senior Bowl business, Kiffin has declined comment on any
matters pertaining to the Raiders that have transpired since the end of
the regular season and could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Rumors were rampant at the Senior Bowl that Kiffin was asked to resign
by Davis and that his authority on personnel and coaching staff hires
had been stripped, reports Herrera denied.

Lofton's most likely position is wide receivers coach. That position was
filled by Charles Coe, who came to the Raiders in 2007 from Alabama
State, where he had been head coach.

Following San Diego's playoff loss to New England, Lofton was
unexpectedly fired by Chargers coach Norv Turner. He interviewed for the
head coaching job with the Raiders twice -- once when coach Art Shell
was hired and again when Kiffin came aboard.

Hiring Lofton without Kiffin's knowledge is significant in that Davis
gave the 32-year-old coach the latitude to remake the entire offensive
staff after Oakland scored just 12 touchdowns on offense in 16 games the
previous season.

Following a 2-14 season, not a single offensive staff member remained,
with Kiffin hiring an entirely new staff with Davis' final approval.

Davis is forcing Kiffin's hand to resign and positioning a Plan B (Lofton)
in case he does. I hope Kiffin does resign. I wouldn't want to be there.

Uhhh, didn't Lofton say that he was once hired as HC of the Raiders?

I don't kiss Al's, Jon-boy, or anyone's butt. But I'm not so ignorant
as to not look at the whole picture and not some, small, easy way to blame
everything on one thing (or person in this case). I've run an $80+ million
business and understand the "buck" idea. I also know that one must rely on
many others to be successful.

And yet there still will be those who mock by posting with the oh so clever
IAAF. I for one had thought that Kiffin had been given much more latitude
and autonomy by Al, which I believed was the first step back to being a
decent organization. I am now forced to face facts: Al will never change.
The Silver and Black will not return to former glory unless and until Al
lets a gm and coach have full control. And it now appears that this will not
come to pass in Al's lifetime, sad as it is for me to say. I would love to
see him hold the trophy one more time, but realistically that is not going
to happen. Frankly I will be surprised if Kiffin lasts the whole season. I
would leave now, with or without the salary.

Nothing...that's the point. If Davis is setting up Kiffin to fail -- and
that's what it looks like -- and I were Kiffin, I'd leave. Let Lofton be the
next yes-man.

I don't know for sure that he is even hired yet, nor that he is a shitty
coach.

I wish I was a Raider insider like you are... I could then be as well
informed.

So you are admitting you'd rather have the Raiders fail than succeed?

Actually, you know what would REALLY be funny? Kiffin comes back and keeps
Russell on the bench all season! "Take that, Al!" LOL!

I thought *you* were the insider! Everytime we voice our opinions on Al, you
question them as if we're uninformed idiots. Truth is, we *are* uninformed
idiots and we rely on you to steer us straight, but it seems you only have
questions for us...when we truly need answers.
