Spygate penalty

Throughout the season I heard many people suggest that the penalties
for the Spygate were unprecedently harsh. I agree with Steve Young.
The penalties are not only puny but they actually help the Patriots.
This year's team was retooled with the free agent acquisitions. They
don't have a first round pick in the draft, so they will have couple
of millions available under the cap. Now they can address their needs
in the free agent market again without the constraint of keeping some
money around for a first rounder. Moroney hasn't worked out. I won't
be surprised if Chargers' back up running back Turner signs a big free
agent contract with the Patriots this year.

First, they actually still have a first round pick, since they traded
for a second one. Apparently, they thought TWO first round picks were
more important than worrying about the salary cap to pay them.

Second, if it's such a great help to not have first round picks, why
aren't people trading them away for whatever they can get for them, even
if it's squat?
