Steelers Sign Two To Reserve/Future List
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers signed two players to their
Reserve/Future List, the team announced today. Quarterback Jared Zabransky
and wide receiver Matt Trannon both signed with the Steelers and will be on
the team's offseason roster.
Zabransky (6-2, 219) was signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted rookie
free agent out of Boise State in 2007. He was released by the Texans
following training camp but spent time on their practice squad last year.
Trannon (6-6, 235) was originally signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an
undrafted rookie free agent out of Michigan State in 2007. After being
released in training camp, he spent time on the Cardinals practice squad
last season. Trannon also was on the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders
practice squads throughout the 2007 season.

Don't get too excited. Zabransky is at best a backup in the
NFL. He may make the team as the 3rd QB.
As for Trannon...he's tall. |

"Tall" is what our receivers are lacking. |

Well, the Trannon dude is "tall." As long as Ben is happy, that is fine
by me (sarcasm, of course). I mean, it doesn't matter to me if the dude
can play, as long as Ben gets his tall receiver , that is cool.
I just hope the dude can play!! Lynn Swann wasn't very tall at 5' 11.
Gosh, I wish he could suit up. LOL |

Actually Zabransky could be a good find... I recall him from college and was
very impressed with the way he could deliver the ball... very strong arm and
quick feet. Not as strong over all as Ben but stronger then say Charlie Batch...

Maybe he'll be Ben's backup when Batch retires, but that's
about it. |

It's takes more than tall to succeed in the NFL. He scored a
10 on the Wonderlic. Only 6 players scored less than that in his
draft class.
More from ESPN:
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?id=11218&univLogin02=stateChanged
Strengths: Uses wide frame to shield defenders from the ball, times
jumps well and is tall so has the potential to develop into a
productive red zone target. Shows good body control when tracking the
ball and flashes the ability to catch the ball at its highest point.
Explodes off the line and has the quick feet to avoid press coverage.
Runs with good power, flashes the ability to make the first defender
miss and can be productive after the catch. Delivers a strong initial
punch and works to sustain blocks once in position. Stays under
control when in space and can adjust to the moving target at the
second level.
Weaknesses: Lacks ideal top-end speed for a receiver and isn't big
enough to move to tight end at this point. Doesn't always play with
good leverage, lacks ideal lower body strength and will have problems
holding own as an in-line blocker. Academically ineligible during his
true freshman season in 2002 and spends much of the off-season playing
basketball for the Spartans, so is somewhat raw. Doesn't read defenses
well and has some problems locating soft spots working against zone
coverage. Rounds off some cuts and is an inconsistent
short-to-intermediate route-runner. Appears to lose focus on occasion
and drops some passes that should catch. He has had durability
problems throughout his career, as well. Missed one game in 2004 due
to a hamstring and broke his jaw during the 2005 off-season. Did not
play vs. Ohio State and Northwestern due to an ankle injury in 2006,
and was carted off the field with an Achilles injury versus Michigan.
Marginal score on the Wonderlic Test.
Overall: Trannon was forced to sit out all of 2002 because of academic
problems. In 2003, he played in 11 of 13 games and caught 28 passes
for 259 yards (9.3 average). Trannon saw action in 11 of the Spartan's
12 games in 2004 and had 36 receptions for 405 yards (11.2 average)
and two touchdowns. In 2005, Trannon played in all 11 games (nine
starts) and caught 40 passes for 573 (14.3 average) and four
touchdowns. Trannon appeared in 10 games in 2006, making nine starts,
and finished with 44 receptions for 518 yards (11.8 average) and three
touchdowns.
Trannon is an intriguing project because of upside but he never
reached his full potential at the collegiate level. Due to his lack of
speed and quick-twitch athleticism, Trannon's best fit in the NFL will
likely be as an H-back. However, his unique combination of size,
athletic ability and power could make him a versatile contributor as a
reserve in the NFL. Regardless, Trannon projects as a late round pick
in the 2007 draft. |

Gosh Jim, it doesn't sound like this Trannon dude is very bright either.
As long as he is tall though. Gosh, I hope they are not bending over
backwards just to make Ben happy. |

I think they're just taking a stab in the dark with him. He
won't cost much, so what the heck.
He isn't bright, but he is athletic...he played basketball in
college as well. But, it's not a good sign that he keeps getting
dropped off other team's practice squads |

Although, that was how the Steelers were able to land Carey Davis last
season. And Carey took away the FB job from a pretty darn good FB
(Kreider.)
Trannon seems like if the Steelers can coach some minimal game sense into
him he has the tools... really just as good as Plax only bigger. Never
know, but I would be willing to wager he could do as much, or more, for the
Offense as Washington or Wilson.
And as he ages he could potentially bulk up to move to TE.
We all know how much the Steelers love those TE's (otherwise known as small
Tackles on other teams...)
BTW, as for Zabransky, I love the signing. He was the QB of a solid winning
club in College and that Bowl win over OK was one of the most exciting Bowl
games ever - and he's the reason. Zabransky would definitely be an upgrade
over any 3rd-stringer the Steelers have had in a long time, and is probably
better than Charlie Batch... with definitely more upside.
Neither is a signing to get too excited about though. The Steelers have
signed guys I liked before only to cut them later... and kept guys (way too
long in some cases) who I couldn't see any value in. time will tell on
these two.
But, as Dan said, at least they went right out and got the "Tall" WR Ben
wanted out of the way. |

True. I think they are also trying to at least kill two birds with one
stone: give Ben a tall receiver to make him happy and also....Hines
Ward will see that this guy is no threat to him.
