I was thinking about this... but that devastating and heartbreaking
loss in 2002 helped shape the current team.

After that loss the Giants tanked in 03, leading to Coughlin coming
in, Kerry Collins proved he was not our QB of the future which lead to
the Eli Manning trade.

Maybe I'm making a stretch on this but maybe a loss (that I consider
to be worse than our beating by the Ravens ) like that was what the
Giants needed.

If they win that game the Giants probably lose to Tampa, keep Fassel
until at least the end of 04 and maybe the teams fortune is totally
different.

This was a pretty good article on how desperate the Giants play and
says that 02 in some ways fuels the desperation

from the article:

But the experience definitely solidified why 12 out of the 16
weeks of the season I tend not to root as vehemently against division
rivals Washington and New York as perhaps I would be expected to.

Because there is some deep, unexplainable connection between those NFC
East teams: their fans, the desperate way they play, and the palpable,
almost foreboding, importance of needing to will themselves to victory
at all cost.

And no I don't include the Dallas Cowboys in this NFC East comrader;are
you kidding me!

Heh, heh
