He's probably got a few more years in him and Heyer played very well
last year. Both of Carolina's starting tackles are free agents.

Sure, but the cap hit of moving him makes that impossible.
Heyer did okay, but not great....he's more natural on the left side
also. |

Jansen is fragile and aging and I don't him commanding a great draft
pick. Probably a good idea to trade him at this point if he is worth
something. |

Really, I thought with a trade all pay was simply transfered. Cap
hits only happen on cuts and retirements.

That's the point. No one would be stupid enough to want to inherit his
contract. Some deal regarding this would have to be worked out. |

A cap hit occurs because bonuses are prorated over the life of the
contract. If you pay a $1M bonus on a 10 year contract, then $100K of it
counts against the cap each year. If the guy plays four years, then gets
cut or retires, then the remaining money hits the following year. In
this example in year five $600K counts against the cap. If the contract
is terminated after June 1 (I think) then the team can absorb it over
two years.
A trade is simply a cessation of the contract, hence the cap hit. There
might be a way to structure the deal to avoid this, but I couldn't find
any examples doing a quick search.

The contract and any future roster bonuses, incentivies, or
escallators transfer to the new team.
The non-prorated amount of any bonuses that the 'skins have ALREADY
paid count against the 'skins cap all at once.
To be specific, Jansen got a 21M check from Danny last year. Even
though that money has been paid, it only counts against the cap for 3M
per year over the seven years of his contract.
So far, only 3M has been prorated for the 2007 season, so to trade him
now would result in a MASSIVE 18M cap hit for 2008 (unless they trade
or cut him after June 1, in which case he will count 9M in 2008 and 9M
in 2009 (even though he would not be on the team)....that's is what is
called Dead cap money. |

Jansen is not fragile. There is no human alive who's leg would NOT
have broken if hit in the same way Jansen's was. As far as right
tackles go, his ratio of games missed to injury is still one of the
best in the league.
If you want to question his effectiveness as a pass blocker, that's
another story. |
